Oxford Street has seen plenty of spectacles. This month it got a gelato cart outside Selfridges<\/strong> with Bottega Veneta<\/strong>‘s name on it, and within hours the videos had escaped London entirely. The concept is the kind of thing that sounds absurd until you taste it. To launch its new fragrance chapter, the house rebuilt each perfume as a flavour, pulling out the citrus, the herbs, the spice and the woody accords from inside the bottles and rebuilding them in a cup. You eat the fragrance, then you decide whether to wear it. Cue the queue, the phones held aloft and a reel that travelled the globe faster than the ice cream melted. London will line up for a pastry or a trainer drop, though rarely for something destined to live on a wrist.<\/p>\n

The collection behind the stunt is Alta<\/strong>, ten eaux de parfum that arrived in June with one delicious rule. Every scent pairs an Italian ingredient with one from elsewhere on the planet, so basil goes steady with Madagascan vetiver, blood orange from the house gardens flirts with North African neroli, Italian leather melts into vanilla and sea salt gets tangled up with oud.<\/p>\n

Then there is Ricordami<\/strong>, the reason the gelato cart makes so much sense. It bottles stracciatella, all milky vanilla with shards of dark chocolate, before dropping in oakwood to keep things dignified. The name means “remember me,” which is either deeply romantic or wildly confident. The bottles wear the woven Intrecciato<\/strong> motif in sculptural glass with a little wooden cap, and they refill, so your conscience survives the receipt.<\/p>\n

So Why Does Every Perfume Smell Like Pudding Lately?<\/h1>\n

Start with a fact that explains almost everything. The companies that invent the flavour of your favourite biscuit are the same ones that invent fine fragrance, since giants like Givaudan<\/strong>, IFF<\/strong> and Symrise<\/strong> run kitchens and perfume labs under one roof. A molecule born to make dessert irresistible sits a corridor away from the perfumer, and good ideas walk. Since Mugler’s Angel<\/em> landed in 1992 with a caramelised sugar molecule, the industry has known that sweetness sells. What has changed is the toolbox.<\/p>\n

Perfumers now reach for creamy milk notes, roasted hazelnut warmth and cocoa thick enough to feel chewable, and these give a scent something the old flower-and-wood playbook rarely managed. Texture. A gourmand feels dense and cosy, like a cashmere blanket for your neck. Biology finishes the job, because flavour reaches us mostly through the nose. One sniff of stracciatella and you are eight years old with sticky fingers on a hot pavement.
