Sarah Chapelle, who runs @taylorswiftstyle on Instagram and authored the forthcoming hardcover Taylor Swift Style: Fashion Through the Eras, noted that the gloves were a styling choice that nodded to trendiness while adding unmistakable drama. Black accessories at the Grammys – could it mean anything other than Reputation?<\/span><\/p>\n

It could. Upon winning Best Pop Vocal Album – her 13th Grammy, a number loaded with meaning in Swiftian folklore – she announced not Reputation (Taylor’s Version) but an entirely new studio album called The Tortured Poets Department. Within seconds, the black-and-white album cover was on Instagram. The world collectively lost its composure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The moment the gloves came off – literally<\/b><\/h2>\n

Here is where the nail<\/a><\/strong> code kicks in. After returning to her seat, Swift quietly slipped off those black opera gloves to reveal a white manicure underneath. Later that evening, when she collected the Album of the Year award – becoming the only artist in history to win it four times – she held the statuette in a way that deliberately showcased her white nails. The gesture was subtle but unmistakable: not the black of Reputation, but the white of The Tortured Poets Department. A new era, announced not with words but with polish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Longtime fan Courtney Bloch has observed that early in Swift’s career, when stylists had more influence over her look, her nails and hands became the one place where she expressed herself independently – glittery manicures during the Fearless and Speak Now eras, the number 13 drawn on her hand, song lyrics scrawled down the length of her arm. During the Eras Tour, Swift painted each fingernail a different color to represent her first 10 studio albums: mint green for her debut, gold for Fearless, purple for Speak Now, red for Red, turquoise for 1989, black for Reputation, pink for Lover, gray for Folklore, peach for Evermore, and sparkly navy for Midnights. Just days before launching the tour in March 2023, she posted rehearsal photos captioned with a nail-polish emoji. Coincidence is not really in her vocabulary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Swift herself confirmed in a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly that nails are a specific way she leaves Easter eggs. In the 2018 music video for Reputation single Delicate, she extends pastel-painted fingers toward the camera in what Bloch describes as an unmistakable invitation to pay attention. Bloch initially interpreted the longer nails as a Reputation reference, recalling the clawlike look in the Look What You Made Me Do video. Another reading draws on the Midnights track You’re Losing Me, recorded in December 2021, in which Swift sings about biting her nails down to the quick – a lyric rumored to reference her ex Joe Alwyn. Press-on nails make nail-biting nearly impossible, and celebrity nail artist Tom Bachik, a Tweezerman ambassador who works with Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez, confirmed that Swift’s longer nails were almost certainly custom press-ons, which can be created and swapped out at speed.<\/span><\/p>\n
