You have 800 followers but no one to call. The paradox feels uniquely modern – and if you are between your late teens and mid-twenties, the data suggests you are not imagining it. What we assume about who gets lonely, and why, turns out to be almost entirely backward.

The generation that grew up connected is the most isolated

We tend to picture loneliness as something that belongs to the elderly – a grandmother sitting alone in a quiet house. But the numbers tell a different story. A 2018 survey conducted by health company Cigna found that nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone or left out. More striking still, Generation Z – individuals born since 1997 who make up 27% of the US population – scored as the most isolated generation, with loneliness scores averaging 10 points higher than those of the Greatest Generation, people born between 1901 and 1927.

In other words, the proportion of people who report feeling lonely actually decreases with age. England’s 2018-2019 Community Life Survey mirrored this trend: 10% of 16- to 24-year-olds reported often or always feeling lonely, compared to only 6% of 25- to 34-year-olds. And loneliness rates in the US rank among the highest globally – more than 1-in-5 adults in the US and UK report chronic loneliness, compared to 1-in-10 in Japan.

So why is a generation raised on instant messaging and social networking the one that feels most alone? Gen Z is the first generation to have life-long access to social media. As of 2018, over 70% of US teens used more than one social media platform, 95% had access to a smartphone, and 43% said they were online almost constantly. Young adults with high social media use are more likely to be lonely than peers who spend less time on these platforms. And those who already feel lonely often turn to social media for compensation – which research suggests may worsen their isolation.

Why adolescence is uniquely dangerous ground for isolation

It is not just screens. Adolescence itself is a critical period of psychological development during which substantial changes to the brain make teenagers particularly vulnerable to emotional turmoil and behavioral extremes. Teens experience rapid increases in mental capabilities but also significant difficulty controlling behavior and emotions. A breakup or a moment of rejection can trigger intense emotional reactions that lead young people to withdraw from their peers entirely.

Then there is the phenomenon psychologist David Elkind calls the invisible audience – an adolescent’s persistent belief that others are constantly scrutinizing their behavior and appearance. Multiple studies suggest that this perception fuels social anxiety and contributes directly to feelings of loneliness. Unlike adults, who have developed coping skills to manage isolation, teenagers are still building those tools during the very period when peer acceptance matters most to their sense of self.

Research from the National Academy of Sciences shows that social rejection produces the same sensory response in the brain as physical pain. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, during the 2014-2015 school year over 20% of students aged 12-18 reported being bullied, and in a 2017 survey of American students in grades 9-12, 15% reported being cyberbullied in the prior 12 months. Girls face an especially steep challenge: the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future project found that since the smartphone era began in 2007, girls have dramatically decreased the time they spend seeing friends or participating in social activities. During adolescence, girls experience depression at twice the rate of boys, and researchers have recorded girls’ confidence levels at nearly 30% lower than boys’ at their lowest point.

The toll goes far beyond feeling sad

Loneliness is not merely an emotional inconvenience. Research published by the US National Library of Medicine shows that high levels of loneliness are associated with poor antibody responses to vaccines, greater psychological stress, and poorer sleep efficiency. For teenagers whose bodies are already under the demands of significant growth, the strong stress response and high cortisol levels triggered by chronic loneliness are particularly damaging. Poor sleep alone contributes to decreased emotional regulation and a higher risk of developing depression.

A 2010 Brigham Young University study concluded that a lack of social relationships is a risk factor for death. Loneliness expert Julianne Holt-Lunstad has described low social interaction as a health risk equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and social isolation is more predictive of death for people under 65 than for older populations. Researchers have also linked loneliness-related chronic stress to low-grade peripheral inflammation – an immune response similar to a fever – which has been connected to cardiovascular diseases. Other studies suggest associations between loneliness and obesity, physiological aging, cancer, and poor hearing.

The behavioral consequences are equally serious. One study using the UCLA Loneliness Scale found a correlation between loneliness and drinking problems, identifying isolation as a likely source of vulnerability to alcohol issues. Substance abuse during adolescence damages the brain by interfering with neurotransmitters, and alcoholism specifically harms the liver and reproductive systems. Being lonely and female was found to significantly increase the odds of having consumed alcohol, and substance abuse often deepens isolation further because teens withdraw to hide their habits.

The bottom line

The youngest adults among us are not lonely because they lack ways to connect – they are lonely in spite of having more connection tools than any generation before them. What matters is not the number of platforms you use but how you use them: studies show that passively scrolling increases isolation, while intentionally maintaining friendships and making new ones is linked to lower loneliness. Strong family communication also buffers against social media’s isolating effects, regardless of family structure. You do not need to delete every app. You need to notice whether your screen time is replacing the face-to-face moments that research consistently identifies as the most powerful antidote to feeling alone.

[3914

“Something shifted”: millennials say loneliness feels worse than ever — and modern life may be to blame - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="You are scrolling through your phone at midnight, watching other people’s highlight reels, and somehow feeling more disconnected with every swipe.
