It seems obvious, right? If she was there, she’s in the movie. Except the editing room has its own rules, and sometimes the footage that excites fans the most never makes it past the final cut. That disconnect between what we expect and what actually lands on screen is at the heart of a growing controversy surrounding The Devil Wears Prada 2 – and the name at the center of the storm is Sydney Sweeney.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Why one of Hollywood’s biggest names ended up on the cutting room floor<\/b><\/h2>\n

Sweeney<\/a><\/strong>, who recently starred in the blockbuster hit The Housemaid and just returned for the third season of Euphoria, was photographed by TMZ on the set of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in New York City on Aug. 6, 2025. Sweeney was meant to appear early in the film, in a moment tied to the introduction of Emily Charlton – the character played by Emily Blunt who has evolved from Miranda Priestly’s former assistant-turned-nemesis in the original into the head of luxury brand Dior in the U.S. in the sequel. Could a brief appearance really have disrupted the pacing of an entire sequence that badly? Apparently, the filmmakers believed so.<\/p>\n

For fans who had been counting on seeing Sweeney share the screen with the returning cast – Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Blunt and Stanley Tucci – the news landed like a betrayal. When you know someone filmed their part, the absence feels personal rather than procedural.<\/p>\n

Inside the sequel’s plot and the scene Sweeney almost inhabited<\/b><\/h2>\n

Understanding why the cut stings requires understanding what The Devil Wears Prada 2 is actually about. Written and directed by David Frankel, who helmed the 2006 original, the sequel picks up with Hathaway’s Andy Sachs spiraling over the crumbling of traditional print media in the digital age. Andy, who took a job with a New York newspaper at the end of the first film, finds herself returning to work for her old boss, the ice-cold and heartless Miranda Priestly, played once again by Streep. The cameos that did survive – and they are plentiful<\/b><\/h2>\n

While Sweeney’s appearance was sliced from the final version, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is far from short on star power beyond its core cast. Lady Gaga’s cameo appearance as herself remains intact, and it is easily the largest appearance of all the other stars who play themselves in the film. That cameo had been widely reported during production, and it delivered.<\/p>\n

The sheer volume of cameos that survived makes Sweeney’s absence all the more conspicuous. If the film had room for a professional basketball player and a morning-show host, we can understand why fans are questioning whether the structural explanation tells the whole story.<\/p>\n
