Sex and the City<\/em> may have made Sarah Jessica Parker a household name, but as the world fell in love with Carrie Bradshaw<\/a>, the real-life Parker faced the pitfalls of public scrutiny. Coming into the spotlight during the height of celebrity tabloid culture, the actress now reflects on how, with her newfound fame, came the sudden and ruthless<\/em> obsession with her appearance.<\/p>\n

Speaking candidly on the Call Her Daddy<\/em> podcast<\/a>, the 60-year-old revealed the personal toll of stepping into Carrie\u2019s Manolos when the series premiered in 1998.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t prepared for public commentary,\u201d she admitted to host Alex Cooper. \u201cNot about the work\u2014just about me.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she navigated the show’s global popularity<\/a>, Parker found herself bombarded with unsolicited opinions. While the show’s revolutionary portrayal of sex-positive women in their 30s was always bound to ruffle feathers at the time, the actress struggled with the personal vitriol.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt that time, I thought I was a fairly confident person,\u201d she reflected. “It really comes into question and is tested when you\u2019re filleted, in a way, when you\u2019re opened up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cchatter\u201d, as she called it, wasn\u2019t just feedback, but felt cruel and pointed, she says, addressing the one-sided nature of online hate. “It didn\u2019t feel like it was actually a conversation.”<\/p>\n

When asked what upset her the most, she responded that comments about her appearance surprised her the most. \u201c[It was] stuff that I couldn\u2019t change and wouldn\u2019t change and had never considered changing\u2014even still after hearing something that was like, \u2018What? Somebody would say that?’\u201d she explained. “I was just like, \u2018Why is this a problem? Why is this deserving of your time, and why do you seem to delight in saying it?’\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalled one magazine\u2019s particularly cutting remark about her body. \u201cIt was like a kick in the rubber parts,\u201d she lamented. \u201cI sobbed because it felt so purposeful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, she managed to not let the trolls<\/a> and expectations get to her, and even credits that time for making her stronger. “We\u2019re better for those kinds of experiences,” she shared with Cooper. “But not all of us are good at it right away.”<\/p>\n
