Sabrina Carpenter is no stranger to a bit of controversy. Honestly, it’s a part of her charm.<\/p>\n

Over the last year, her Short \u2018n\u2019 Sweet <\/em>tour had many critics clutching their pearls, mostly due to her risqu\u00e9 outfits<\/a> and tongue-in-cheek choreography that imitated some X-rated activities. Nonetheless, the singer remained undeterred, telling those<\/a> who had a problem, \u201cJust don\u2019t come to the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, it looks like her latest album won’t be bending to naysayers, and is already drawing criticism before even being released, thanks to some bold cover art.<\/p>\n

This Wednesday, June 11, the singer announced the upcoming release of her new album Man\u2019s Best Friend <\/em>over Instagram<\/a>. This reveal comes less than a week after the surprise drop of her single \u2018Manchild<\/a>\u2019 (which will be on the album).<\/p>\n

With the announcement, the pop star dropped what looks to be the album cover, which features her on all fours in a black mini dress and stilettos. A mostly off-camera suited figure looms over her, clutching a fistful of the singer\u2019s signature golden locks. Accompanying the cover reveal was a second image, featuring a close-up of a fluffy dog wearing a collar that read, \u201cMan\u2019s best friend.\u201d But it isn\u2019t the latter image that fans are taking issue with.<\/p>\n

Carpenter\u2019s pop identity and predominantly female fan base have been built on an unapologetic embrace of female sexuality and empowerment. However, some feel this latest cover misses the mark, particularly considering the current state of political affairs and women\u2019s subjugation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis cover isn\u2019t landing the way you thought it would right now. The timing\u2026\u201d commented one fan. \u201cThis better be the most feminist, woman empowering album ever with a cover like this, Sabrina,\u201d said another.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, there were those fans who didn\u2019t see an issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Sabrina Carpenter\u2026 her whole shtick is satire,\u201d and \u201cMen treat women like dogs. That\u2019s the joke,\u201d two supporters commented on the intended irony. \u00a0Another stated, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with the album cover in my opinion. She\u2019s an adult\u2026 she might actually be into it?\u201d<\/p>\n

The context of the cover\u2019s controversy may be surmised by a comment from one fan on the supposed intentions behind the art, stating, \u201cAny irony is lost because the people who are supposed to be offended by this actually want this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carpenter\u2019s true intentions behind the cover choice will not be clear until the album drops this August<\/a>. However, if the rest of the album is similar to Manchild, then \u201cdumb\u201d but nonetheless \u201csexy\u201d men may be of note, in which case the reception of any intended irony may be blurred in today’s climate.<\/p>\n
