She may do her own stunts, but for Jennifer Garner<\/a>, safety is always key. And this mantra is equally as important when it comes to suncare, a topic the 53-year-old actress is passionate about.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelanoma is no joke,\u201d Garner says, \u201cbut it\u2019s the most preventable kind of cancer.\u201d To reduce one\u2019s chances, wearing sun protection<\/a> is paramount. But, unfortunately, \u201cmany people still don\u2019t take this seriously,\u201d she reports. The is likely due to the fact that \u201cwe have an old idea of what sunscreen feels like and looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thankfully, huge strides have been made with new suncare formulas \u2014 they actually infuse skin with hydration and even appear invisible. Such is the case with one of Garner\u2019s current favorites:\u00a0 Neutrogena\u2019s Ultra Sheer Mineral Face Liquid SPF 70<\/a>. In fact, Neutrogena (the brand Garner\u2019s been a spokesmodel of for the past 17 years) has made it more pleasant than ever to be protected, which may lead to greater overall compliance with use. \u201cIf we can just shift ourselves to put [protection] on every day, we can shift the whole narrative and actually shift the future,\u201d and cut the number of people at risk of developing melanoma.<\/p>\n

Reducing cancer risk is vital, but protecting your skin with SPF has beautifying benefits, too. \u201cIf you want to look good in your 50s, wear sunscreen in your 20s,\u201d Garner says. She believes sun safety is \u201ca marathon,\u201d and a lifelong practice. Indeed, by shielding UVA and UVB, skin integrity is strengthened, staving off fine lines, uneven texture, and hyperpigmentation like freckles and melasma.<\/p>\n

To take control of your health and aging, make sun protection part of your daily routine. Follow some of Jen Garner\u2019s strategies:<\/p>\n

Go Big.<\/h3>\n

When it comes to SPF numbers, the higher, the better. \u201cIt used to be that if you were wearing 15, you were being extreme,\u201d she says. But after listening to the scientists at Neutrogena over the years, she\u2019s learned that \u201cthe higher the number, the more the rays are just uniformly bounced off your skin, and the less they can penetrate. Today, Garner wears SPF 70.<\/p>\n

Make it a Habit.<\/h3>\n

No matter how high an SPF one wears, if it\u2019s not part of a consistent routine, it won\u2019t go the distance. \u201cFor me, it needs to be like brushing my teeth. It\u2019s not something I\u2019m going to negotiate with myself. I\u2019m just washing my face, brushing my teeth, getting out of the shower, and I\u2019m putting on my sunscreen,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Do Double Duty.<\/h3>\n

\u201cI get to work with sunscreen on, and my makeup artist is likely going to add another layer before makeup.\u201d Gone are the days of gloppy formula that pilled under makeup. \u201cIt really used to be that makeup artists felt like using sunscreen under makeup was just, like, well, say goodbye to your makeup,\u201d she says. Now, it\u2019s the opposite. \u201cUltra Sheer really works like primer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keep it Simple.<\/h3>\n

And it\u2019s not just affordable suncare that Garner swears by. \u201cI really am a Neutrogena girlie through and through,\u201d she admits. A longtime fan of the brand\u2019s see-through beauty bar as well as the shampoo and conditioner (as a kid, she got them in her Christmas stocking), she\u2019s also a fan of drugstore mascara. \u201cA Maybelline mascara never hurt a gal!\u201d she exclaims.<\/p>\n

This is a far cry from the extravagant beauty purchases that have become de rigueur, especially for Gen Alpha. But Garner and her family haven\u2019t been swayed. \u201cI have three teenagers, and I don\u2019t have Sephora teens. They\u2019re not layering things at night. They aren\u2019t on TikTok.
