History was made in Vatican City today, May 8, when Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th pope<\/a> of the Roman Catholic Church. Taking the name Pope Leo XIV, he becomes the first American to ascend to the papacy in the Church\u2019s more than 2,000-year history.<\/p>\n

The announcement came after a secretive conclave held in the Sistine Chapel, where cardinal-electors from around the world gathered to select a successor to Pope Francis. Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Prevost entered the Order of St. Augustine and was ordained a priest in 1982.
