There are certain items that, when debuted on the runway, are destined for cult status from the moment they’re spotted by those sitting pretty in the front row – or, in 2020, the minute they come into frame on the live stream. One such piece is Coach’s beige leather trench coat, which was debuted at the brand’s autumn/winter 2020 show in February by none other than Debbie Harry.

Harry’s inclusion in the show was fitting: The entire collection was a homage to the 1980s downtown creative scene, and included in it was a collaboration with the estate of poet, musician, and graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat is behind the beige coat, which is covered in art-inspired motifs and slogans.

A few months after it was introduced on the runway, the piece made its street style debut, spotted on none other than Kate Moss, who wore it in her perfectly unpolished way: with black skinny jeans, a black top, vintage cowboy boots and a Chanel handbag slung over her shoulder.

JLo and Madonna added their names to the list of A-list fans a few months later, before Tracee Ellis Ross joined the group this week.

While on set, Ellis Ross took a moment to show off her outfit, consisting of Bottega Veneta’s ultra-cool beige gumboots and her matching Coach trench. “I have such bad knees. Sometimes it’s just easier to keep my leg straight. I like to think of myself as a contemporary dancer that made good use of her bad knees,” Ellis Ross joked on Instagram as she picked her leg up and placed it on the ground. “Also, thank you @jasonrembert for telling me about my new favorite pandemic shoes by @bottegaveneta! And thank you @coach x Jean-Michel Basquiat for this stellar trench.”

Unfortunately for us, the trench is currently completely sold out online. Stay tuned for a highly-anticipated restock.
