Today, news broke that 38-year-old Election star, Jessica Campbell, died on December 29. According to reports, the actress passed ‘suddenly and unexpectedly’ but the cause of death is not yet known. Campbell who starred as Tammy Metzler in the 1999 Oscar-nominated comedy worked alongside Reese Witherspoon.

Upon news of the death, Witherspoon took to Twitter to share her condolences to the family. “So heart broken to hear this,” the Legally Blonde star posted. “Working with Jessica on Election was such a pleasure. I’m sending all my love to Jessica‘s family and loved ones.”

Directed by Alexander Payne, as the name suggests Election follows Tracy Flick (Witherspoon) as she approaches her high school presidential election. However, teacher Jim McAllister (played by Matthew Broderick) has other plans. He convinces jock Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) to run as well, sparking off an interesting chain of events. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a Golden Globe for Best Actress for Reese Witherspoon.

Campbell also starred in Freaks and Geeks between 1999 and 2000 before appearing for the last time in The Safety of Objects in 2002. She later worked as a naturopathic doctor.

A GoFundMe page revealed she left her 10-year-old son, Oliver. “While coping with this unexpected and tragic turn of events and planning for Oliver’s future, the family is also faced with unexpected cremation, memorial, and probate expenses. All funds collected will go towards meeting expenses and providing for Oliver,” cousin Sarah Wessling wrote on the crowdfunding site.

Later, Reese Witherspoon implored her 2.8 million followers to look after their health.

Rest in peace, Jessica.
