As seen in documentary trailer, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, Demi Lovato has candidly revealed she suffered a heart attack and three strokes in the year 2018, a medical emergency which occurred during a near-fatal overdose. While the 28-year-old artist has revealed details of her drug abuse problem in the past, the extent of her illness is only just coming to light.

In the forthcoming YouTube production – available from March 23 – Lovato says she wants to set the record straight from a tumultuous two-year period.

“I had so much to say over the past two years, wanting to set the record straight about what it was that happened. Any time that you suppress a part of yourself, it’s gonna overflow.”

Directed by Michael D. Ratner, the four-part series features interviews from friends and family as well as A-list stars, Elton John and Christina Aguilera. It is slated to be a no-filter recount on Lovato’s early life, rise to fame, and rapid decline of the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer, which led her to a near-death experience.

“I crossed a line that I had never crossed before…I snapped,” she reveals during the trailer.” She later continues, “I had three strokes. I had a heart attack. My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes [to live].”

According to a TCA press tour this week, the former Disney channel star has since revealed she suffered brain damage from the event.

“I don’t drive a car because I have blind spots in my vision,” she told reporters. “For a long time, [I] had a really hard time reading. Reading was a big deal when I was able to read out of a book, which was two months later because my vision was so blurry. I dealt with a lot of the repercussions and I think they are kind of still there to remind me of what could happen if I ever get into a dark place again. I’m grateful for those reminders but I’m so grateful that I’m someone who didn’t have to do a lot of rehabbing. The rehabbing came in the emotional side and the therapeutic side internally. I did a lot of work after that, just not physical.”
