Today Jamie Spears has agreed to step down as Britney Spears’ co-conservator after 13 years at the helm of the singer’s assets and financial decisions. Mr. Spears and his lawyer reportedly filed legal documents to the Los Angeles Superior Court overnight to relinquish control, according to paperwork obtained by TMZ<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

He does so, despite what he believe is his daughter’s best interests.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate \u2026 and it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears\u2019 best interests,\u201d the court documents read.<\/p>\n

\u201cNevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter\u2019s new lawyer to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of his formal title, Mr. Spears will always be Ms. Spears\u2019 father, he will always love her unconditionally, and he will always look out for her best interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

It comes after the months-long court battle with the pop star where Ms. Spears recently asked the court to charge her father with conservatorship abuse<\/a>. Ms. Spear’s newly-appointed lawyer Mathew Rosengart is \u201cpleased\u201d by the result but disappointed by the drawn-out process.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased but not necessarily surprised that Mr. Spears and his lawyer finally recognise that he must be removed. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others,\u201d Rosengart told the publication. \u201cWe look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter\u2019s estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears\u2019s sworn deposition in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr. Spears should step aside immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

In late-June, Spears publicly spoke on the conservatorship for the first time<\/a> and detailed the abusive treatment which included being forced to take lithium and denied the right to remove her birth control. While we’ve been privy to these details over just a few months, new evidence<\/a> allegedly suggests the singer has been fighting to end the conservatorship for more than a decade.<\/p>\n

This is a huge win for the #FreeBritney movement. But it’s certainly not over yet.
