Meet your new skincare sidekick, acid layering.

As we approach the one and a half year mark of face mask wearing, congested skin has unfortunately become the norm. It’s nearly impossible for pores to not be clogged with sweat, debris, dead skin cells, and impurities. Since we can’t walk around with filters IRL, we contacted Dr. Jason Emer, board certified dermatologist from LA, to find out how to combat our dull looking selfies. Fortunately, he’s a man with a plan and taught us about the art of acid layering.

Before we get into the specifics of acid layering, Dr. Emer says it’s imperative we first prep the skin. If skin is not properly cleansed, it cannot be properly treated. Dr. Emer told us that he always has his patients double cleanse their skin with a foaming or hydrating cleanser, followed by an ezymatic cleanser. The rule of thumb is to use an oil based cleanser first and then use a water based cleanser.

Emerage Enzymatic Polish face cleanser (Dhs164, Emerage Cosmetics) contains papaya and natural alpha hydroxy acids. (Instagram @emeragecosmetics)

After double cleansing, Dr. Emer instructs his patients to to micropeel or exfoliate to decrease residual oil and debris in pores so skin can more readily accept the actives within the acid layering. Dr. Emer recommends using NudeSkin Lemon-Aid Glow Micropeel (Dhs150, Sephora) with a QYKSonic Zoe Bliss (Dhs544, Emerage Cosmetics) skincare tool.

The pulsating QYKSonic Zoe Bliss reduces the signs of aging and promotes a youthful glow by cleansing, massaging, and maximising skin care product penetration and absorption deep into the skin. (Instagram @qyksonic)

Dr. Emer suggests thinking of layering acids like double cleansing. Just like you first use an oil cleanser (because oil attracts oil), start by applying an oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid (BHA) to your skin and follow with water-soluble alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). BHAs like salicylic acid dissolve sebum and debris in the pores, exfoliate the skin, and prevent future breakouts. AHAs like glycolic and lactic acid are chemical exfoliators. Together, they can work in synergy to effectively deep clean your pores.

To apply the acids, use the pipette to dispense four to five drops of your chosen BHA into your fingertips. Rub the serum into your fingertips and gently press the acid into your skin using a tapping motion. Wait a few seconds and repeat with your AHA of choice.

Apply salicylic acid like Skinceticals Silymarin CR (Dhs707, BasharaCare) before glycolic or lactic acid. (Instagram @skinceuticals)

The last step just might be the most important. It’s imperative that you finish with with a broad spectrum sunblock to ensure you skin is protected from the sun. Emerage Skin Fusion Shield SPF 30 BB Cream (Dhs256, Emerage Cosmetics) oil-free formula ensures your skin stays protected from the sun and gives your skin a diffused, velvety finish.
