Especially as she didn\u2019t have any experience in the field \u2013 just (coffee) bagfuls of passion and drive. Now, despite 2020\u2019s curveballs, she\u2019s smelling the sweet scent of not just the finest Arabica beans but huge success, too.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Your coffee journey is a very personal one, isn\u2019t it?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Moving to Dubai and realising that no coffee was coming directly from the country of origin, I started bringing coffee from Ethiopia for myself, my family and my friends. Soon, I started to see that there was a real demand for good coffee. I decided to bring 500kgs of coffee over. I actually kept it in my house and roasted every batch by hand and to order. That\u2019s how it all started&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_879\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-879\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-879 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/booncoffee_120261446_1443495069180207_7855107502153075172_n.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"740\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-879\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CFyPndSFD6K\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\">@BOONCOFFEE<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>How much of what you do is instinctive and how much is taught?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Ethiopia, coffee is a big part of our culture &#8211; it&#8217;s integral to our daily lives and I grew up around my relatives preparing coffee. My mother was my first teacher. When I started my business, I took a roasting class to deepen my knowledge. Roasting with an industrial roaster is a science. Everything else, I learned on the job.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What\u2019s your first memory associated with coffee?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sitting down with my mother at my aunt\u2019s house and being surrounded by the smell of coffee being roasted over charcoal.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What sets Boon apart from other coffee companies in Dubai?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We source and import our beans directly from origin, we roast in-house and produce custom blends. We also source coffee from one of the closest origins in the region, so our coffee has the shortest journey from farm to cup.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What makes the perfect cup of coffee?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>High grade beans that are roasted in small batches and made with love.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignfull-width wp-image-880 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/DSC09521_Horizontal.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1110\" height=\"740\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Is instant really that bad? What makes a coffee \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018bad\u2019 and is it down to personal taste or are there goalposts?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is no such thing as bad coffee. It\u2019s about convenience and personal taste. However, single origin, locally roasted coffee has a depth of flavour that goes beyond a jolt of caffeine.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What\u2019s your coffee pet peeve?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People who assume that all coffee has a bitter or burnt taste. They\u2019ve just had coffee that hasn\u2019t been made properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The best cup of coffee you have ever tasted was&#8230;.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I travel to the farms in Ethiopia and the farmer\u2019s family makes me a cup. There\u2019s nothing better than that and I look forward to it every time I go.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignfull-width wp-image-881 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/booncoffee_120970958_192350485671058_8948452019700355525_n.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"740\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How did the pandemic change your business?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It forced us to look beyond wholesale and move into retail. We already had a cafe\u0301, but we were hesitant about expanding. Our cafe\u0301 in Nakheel Mall\u2019s Depachika Food Hall opened at the beginning of the pandemic and has been a lifeline to the business as wholesale slowed down.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What\u2019s your advice to aspiring entrepreneurs?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>You have to start. The path may change and you have to be willing to be flexible, but the most important thing is to start.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The biggest surprise to you when opening your own business was&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>How many people were willing to give me a chance. They\u2019ve stayed true to their original concept and are also very supportive of other small businesses.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Did you have any mentors or anyone who guided you along the way?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Chef Izu Ani has been a big supporter and a mentor. He\u2019s a great example of what is possible.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What was your big break?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I would have to say when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laserre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">La Serre Bistro &amp; Boulangerie<\/a>\u00a0became our client. To have our coffee in such a prestigious restaurant really put us on the map.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What achievement are you proudest of?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m proud that a lot of local roasters are now using Ethiopian coffee.
