It starred Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, Emily Ratajkowski and Kendall Jenner partying on a boat off a private island in the Bahamas that once belonged to notorious criminal Pablo Escobar. Rapper Ja Rule was a co-founder and the event, Fyre Festival, promised luxury accommodation \u2013 for around Dhs918,000 you could stay on a private yacht with your own chef, world-class food and headline acts like Major Lazer. In short, it made Coachella look C-list.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_729\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-729\" style=\"width: 706px\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-729 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/fyre-festival-6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"468\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EXPECTATIONS&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_730\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-730\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-730 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/camp-shot-2_10413250.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8230;VS. Toilets had only been thought of at the last minute&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"pullquote-container\">If you\u2019ve watched Netflix&#8217;s brilliant new documentary, <em>Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 and you probably have by now \u2013 you\u2019ll know how this story ends. After posting about the festival in exchange for the trip, CC (@ccclarkebeauty, 1.6m followers) was one of thousands of people (they\u2019d paid up to Dhs275,000, based on the promise they\u2019d seen online) who landed in the Bahamas in 2017 to find a disaster zone.\u00a0<span class=\"pullquote pullquote-processed\">\u2018Luxury villas\u2019 were replaced by emergency tents left over from Hurricane Matthew. The free accommodation promised to 250 influencers didn\u2019t exist. Toilets had only been thought of at the last minute<\/span>. Shortly after the 10,000 festivalgoers arrived, the event was cancelled, leaving everyone stranded.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_731\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-731\" style=\"width: 592px\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-731 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/cc-clark_10413105.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"740\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">@CCCLARKEBEAUTY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CC had never suspected things might go wrong. The first warning signs came when she was on the plane \u2013 a commercial flight, rather than the private jet promised to guests. &#8220;I heard murmurs that people hadn\u2019t been paid,&#8221; she says. \u201cThen people started handing around pictures of the festival on their phones, saying, \u2018Is this true?\u2019 But, by then, we were all in too deep.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-732\" style=\"width: 987px\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-732 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/header-final.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"987\" height=\"740\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FYRE&#8217;S PROMOTIONAL SOCIAL MEDIA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Things only got worse. In lieu of luxury accommodation, CC was taken to a cruise ship with about 30 others. She quickly learned that none of the staff on the ship had been paid, and claims she was \u201ctrapped onboard\u201d. When she eventually made it to the island, she found festival-goers sleeping rough on the beach, \u201cbeing eaten alive by mosquitos\u201d and unable to find a flight home. She says organisers did nothing to help, and suspects they\u2019d fled the island. She received just one message from festival organisers, with the name of a bar where people could find food, water and safety. \u201cEveryone was abandoned\u2026 trapped,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI was panicked and angry. You never think that something that huge, where big, worldwide artists are performing, is going to fall through like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignfull-width wp-image-733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/concierge_10414971_0.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"740\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Billy McFarland, the man behind Fyre, has since been sentenced to six years in jail after he \u201cfraudulently induced over 100 investors to invest more than Dhs100m.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ps-rl\"><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"pullquote-container\"><span class=\"pullquote-processed pullquote-quote\">&#8220;There\u2019s a deeper message: at its core, the film is a damning indictment of social media and influencer culture&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"pullquote-container\"><em>Fyre<\/em>\u00a0is compulsive viewing, the kind of real-life, true-crime story that has become a pop culture mainstay in recent years. But\u00a0<span class=\"pullquote pullquote-processed\">there\u2019s a deeper message: at its core, the film is a damning indictment of social media and influencer culture<\/span>. As Marc Weinstein, a music festival consultant, says in the film, \u201cI look back at my posts on social media and it was all beautiful beaches and sunsets, but I was going through the hardest experience of my life. Fyre shows what happens when you take that to an extreme.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_734\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-734\" style=\"width: 761px\" class=\"wp-caption alignfull -width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-734 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/ja-rule-and-Billy_10413109.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"761\" height=\"516\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FESTIVAL CO-FOUNDERS JA RULE AND BILLY MCFARLAND<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"pullquote-container\"><span class=\"pullquote-processed pullquote-quote\">&#8220;As the documentary gained traction, many wondered if it spelled the end of influencer culture&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"pullquote-container\">Jillionaire, of band Major Lazer, puts it even more starkly: \u201cFyre was basically like Instagram come to life.\u201d Last week,\u00a0<span class=\"pullquote pullquote-processed\">as the documentary gained traction, many wondered if it spelled the end of influencer culture<\/span>. (Kendall Jenner was paid Dhs918,000 for one Instagram post about the festival, in stark contrast to Maryann Rolle, a Bahamian restaurant owner who said she lost Dhs184,000 of her life savings catering for Fyre.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignfull-width wp-image-735 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/Fyre-Festival-lawsuits_10413104.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bella Hadid has publicly apologised for ever putting her name to it but, as one Fyre employee who was also in the dark says in the documentary,\u00a0\u201cIf we didn\u2019t know what was going on, how could we expect a model to? \u201cWhen I saw the other names who were promoting it, I thought, \u2018Well, this is legit!\u2019\u201d says CC, the only British influencer to have been invited. \u201cI was only a year into my influencer career and it was exciting to think I could be there with big names.\u201d She says the agent who\u2019d emailed her was someone she had worked with before and trusted. She\u2019d also promoted and attended Coachella, and says this didn\u2019t feel any different.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignfull-width wp-image-736 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/04\/food_10413248_0.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"741\" height=\"740\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The experience has changed how CC operates today; she is now far more diligent about what she puts her name to, and she has taken on management and a lawyer. And that vigilance is now being demanded across the board. Dreamlike images of models playing in paradise lured thousands to Fyre. they should serve as a reminder to us all to question the hurricane-tent reality behind anyone\u2019s top nine. \u201cThis has opened everyone\u2019s eyes about Instagram versus reality,\u201d says CC. \u201cIt\u2019s important people are wise to who they follow, and question whether things are real.
