The Cartier LOVE bracelet needs no introduction. <\/span>A lasting icon of the jewellery world, it has <\/span>formed a key part of the zeitgeist for designer and <\/span>sentimental jewellery from its conception in 1969 <\/span>right up until the present day. With an ever-modern <\/span>aesthetic, the bracelet racks up an estimated <\/span>350,000 online searches per month (it was 2016\u2019s <\/span>most Googled piece of jewellery).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jewellery is inherently sentimental \u2013 think <\/span>engagement rings, wedding bands, birthstones, <\/span>the marketing is endless \u2013 yet Cartier is the only <\/span>house to name an entire collection \u2018LOVE\u2019, <\/span>making it uniquely iconic in an industry fuelled by <\/span>gestures of love.<\/span><\/p>\n

The history of the love collection<\/h3>\n

The Cartier LOVE bracelet was imagined by the <\/span>Italian designer Aldo Cipullo in 1969. The son of <\/span>a Neapolitan jeweller, Cipullo made a name for <\/span>himself in the Big Apple in the early 1960s before <\/span>joining Cartier New York in 1969. <\/span><\/p>\n

Significantly, Cipullo was Cartier\u2019s first designer to <\/span>be singled out, breaking its strict policy of designer <\/span>anonymity. Lending a bold and industrially <\/span>inspired approach to jewellery, Cipullo embraced <\/span>the spirit of 1970s rebellion and romance. <\/span>Designed to be worn for extended periods of time <\/span>by both men and women in romantic liaisons, <\/span>the LOVE bracelet was formed from two solid <\/span>gold semi-circles, decorated with screw heads and <\/span>intended to be secured with a tiny screwdriver <\/span>by a lover. Inspired by mechanics and tooling in <\/span>his own workshop, as well as previous Cartier <\/span>designs and archives, Cipullo would design the <\/span>equally industrial Juste Un Clou collection just <\/span>two years later.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 1970s, when New York was at the height <\/span>of the \u2018free love\u2019 era that rejected traditional <\/span>monogamy and liberation, the LOVE bracelet was <\/span>presented as a rebellious symbol of commitment <\/span>and intimacy. The notion of attachment and <\/span>locking a solid gold bracelet to a romantic <\/span>partner became a bold statement in the era of <\/span>experimentation. These pieces were typically <\/span>designed in bold proportions, set in textured <\/span>gold and adorned with unpolished crystals, large <\/span>precious gemstones and hardstones. Against this <\/span>backdrop, the Cartier LOVE bracelet was a sleek, <\/span>modern and clean outlier whose permanent and <\/span>lasting appeal challenged the norms of changing <\/span>one\u2019s jewels for each outfit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly set apart from Cartier\u2019s own back <\/span>catalogue of bespoke orders for tiaras and suites <\/span>for high-society clientele, the LOVE bracelet was <\/span>intended as a universal and modern symbol of <\/span>devotion unlike any other.<\/span><\/p>\n

And everlasting they have become, possessing <\/span>a part of the cultural imagination ever since <\/span>their inception. Defining a generation\u2019s idea of <\/span>modern love, these notoriously difficult to put <\/span>on \u2013 and remove \u2013 bracelets have developed a lore <\/span>of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n

A canonical yet timeless jewellery design, the Cartier <\/span>LOVE bracelet has of course evolved over its 56 <\/span>years, and the Maison has felt a duty to maintain a <\/span>careful balance between \u201cnodding to the heritage <\/span>but also looking to the future\u201d, as explained by <\/span>Arnaud Carrez, Senior Vice President and Chief <\/span>Marketing Officer of Cartier. With a design so <\/span>iconic, it is \u201cmore complicated, more challenging to <\/span>enrich an existing collection than to design the new <\/span>ones.\u201d Previous versions of the collection include <\/span>the setting of diamonds in place of the screws <\/span>in the 1970s, white and rose gold versions in the <\/span>following decade, and a new screw clasp system in <\/span>2011, allowing the screws to remain attached to the <\/span>bracelet, and preventing the risk of loss during use. <\/span><\/p>\n

Unveiled this September, however, is the boldest <\/span>iteration of the LOVE collection to date, fittingly <\/span>named \u2018LOVE Unlimited\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

A new era in the Cartier love story<\/h3>\n

Carrez explained to GRAZIA that \u201cthe philosophy <\/span>at Cartier is to constantly transform, nurture our <\/span>iconic collections\u201d, with the notoriety of the LOVE <\/span>collection perhaps presenting the highest stakes <\/span>of all. The LOVE Unlimited collection is a true <\/span>feat of innovation, the result of over 100 trials <\/span>and prototypes for Cartier during development. <\/span>Presenting a new \u201clove story without limits\u201d, this <\/span>collection embodies an ergonomic, second-skin <\/span>version of the original bracelet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reimagining the rigid oval shape of Cipullo\u2019s <\/span>bracelet, the LOVE Unlimited collection embraces <\/span>a fluid and flexible design. No longer centred on <\/span>romantic attachment but on the beauty of self- <\/span>connection, the new LOVE Unlimited collection <\/span>features a flexible bracelet made of 200 specially <\/span>miniaturised components and is fastened by an <\/span>invisible clasp. Elegantly reinterpreting the original <\/span>spirit of the LOVE bracelet, with resplendent <\/span>links and refined updates, this contemporary <\/span>jewel is designed to retain the deeply personalm<\/span>symbolism of the first design, enriched with <\/span>contemporary considerations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Easy to put on and take off by oneself, Carrez <\/span>describes this innovation as truly \u201cunlimited\u201d, a <\/span>user-friendly and inclusive design that can cater to <\/span>all love \u2013 whether self-love, romantic love, platonic <\/span>love, or simply a love of jewellery \u2013 \u201cLove is one of <\/span>the founding pillars of the Maison.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The screw motif of the 1969 LOVE bracelet now <\/span>adopts an iconic and decorative function, as well <\/span>as a practical function, in the LOVE Unlimited <\/span>collection, providing a striking yet recognisable <\/span>detail, and adding a fresh perspective on the <\/span>classic design with an updated clasp. Available in <\/span>yellow-, rose- and white gold, with bracelets and <\/span>rings, the new LOVE Unlimited collection writes <\/span>a new chapter in Cartier\u2019s story, while crucially <\/span>remaining \u201cvery true to the historic LOVE\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is expressed beautifully in the modern-day <\/span>interpretation, featuring two hands clasped, <\/span>each wearing a LOVE bracelet. The LOVE <\/span>Unlimited imagery features an identical pose, <\/span>and incorporates both the historic design and <\/span>the flexible, fluid links of the LOVE Unlimited <\/span>bracelet, designed to be stacked together <\/span>seamlessly to interpret and enrich each wearer\u2019s <\/span>unique love story and express their individuality.<\/span><\/p>\n

The notion for this collection was clear in our <\/span>conversation with Carrez \u2013 the interpretation of <\/span>the LOVE Unlimited bracelet and the sentiment <\/span>behind it is entirely down to the wearer, and how they want to wear the piece to express themselves. The days of a prescriptive screwdriver-wielding partner have been eschewed in favour of \u201cexpressing one\u2019s love or expressing\u2026 your singularity, your personality\u201d. This is entirely appropriate for the incredibly diverse consumers of the LOVE collection, as Carrez points out. \u201cThe penetration of the interest of LOVE is across the board, across regions and across age brackets.\u201d The LOVE Unlimited collection is not a one-size-fits-all approach, but a modern, fluid and ergonomic homage to a jewel that has a rich, significant and storied heritage. <\/span><\/p>\n

After all, as Carrez highlights, the significance of LOVE Unlimited brings the notion of love as a pillar of the Maison. Cartier was propelled through the love of three brothers in the early 20th century, and love, of course, features prominently in its collections, but is a very real part of the Maison\u2019s purpose. \u201cThe attention to service and to treatment can be in events, can be in our boutiques, the sense of welcoming, also through our philanthropic actions, initiatives [such as] the Cartier Women\u2019s Initiative [and the] the Cartier Philanthropy Foundation.\u201d The Cartier Women\u2019s Initiative is empowering entrepreneurs to drive positive social and environmental change. Likewise, Cartier\u2019s Philanthropy Foundation\u2019s mission is to improve the lives of the most vulnerable communities in the world. \u201cSo, love has a true meaning within Cartier.
