We’ve (arguably) come a long way since the 2000s-era coverage of celebrities and their bodies<\/a>. Still, there seems to be a growing interest in the appearances of, specifically, the women<\/a> of Hollywood. While it’s not always from a place of criticism\u2014fans often voice genuine concerns over the health of their idols\u2014the line between what should and shouldn’t be discussed with those in the spotlight is grey at best. For those on the receiving end, though, it can feel wildly unfair. One starlet who knows this is Ariana Grande, who has recently garnered attention over her apparent shrinking frame.<\/p>\n

As she and co-star Cynthia Erivo<\/a>, who both come in at just 5’2, embarked on the global Wicked<\/em> press tour<\/a>, Grande’s thinner body became a topic of conversation. While the singer never acknowledged the specific comments<\/a> being hurled at her, she has now addressed the impacts of beauty standards and the scrutiny that follows young women.<\/p>\n

In an interview for the film, French reporter Sally<\/a> asked the 31-year-old how she copes with the \u201cbeauty standards\u201d and \u201coverwhelming\u201d pressure women feel to always look perfect\u2014a question that elicited an emotional response.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy goodness. I\u2019m not gonna\u2013\u201d she said, holding back tears. \u201cGood question.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Erivo sat with her and comforted her, the singer went on to talk about growing up famous.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been kind of doing this in front of the public and kind of been a specimen in a petri dish, really, since I was 16 or 17, so I have heard it all,\u201d she began. \u201cI\u2019ve heard every version of it\u2014of what\u2019s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it\u2019s wrong for different reasons. But that\u2019s everything from\u2014even just the simplest thing\u2014your appearance, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

The former child star explained that it\u2019s \u201chard to protect yourself from that noise\u201d when \u201cyou\u2019re young and you\u2019re hearing all kinds of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that it\u2019s something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you\u2019re experiencing it on,\u201d she continued. \u201cEven if you go to Thanksgiving dinner, and someone\u2019s granny says, \u2018Oh my God, you look skinnier! What happened?\u2019 or \u2018You look heavier! What happened?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Grande then went on to condemn this kind of discourse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think in today\u2019s society, there is a comfortability that we shouldn\u2019t have at all [with[ commenting on others\u2019 looks, appearance, what they think is going on behind the scenes or health or how they present themselves,\u201d she said. \u201cFrom what you\u2019re wearing to your body to your face to your everything, there\u2019s a comfortability that people have commenting on that that I think is really dangerous\u2014and I think it\u2019s dangerous for all parties involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for how she deals with the unwanted attention, Grande explained that she doesn\u2019t \u201cinvite it in anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not welcome,\u201d she asserted. \u201cI have work to do, I have a life to live, I have friends to love on, I have so much love, and it\u2019s not invited, so I don\u2019t leave space for it anymore… You keep yourself safe because no one has the right to say s\u2013t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fans first started commenting on Grande’s weight loss when she began filming for Wicked<\/em><\/a> last year, spurring her to post a TikTok<\/a> about the content.<\/p>\n

In the clip, she encouraged people to be \u201cgentler and less comfortable commenting on people\u2019s bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe body that you\u2019ve been comparing my current body to was the unhealthiest version of my body. I was on a lot of antidepressants and drinking on them and eating poorly,\u201d she insisted. \u201c[I was] at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy, but that, in fact, wasn\u2019t my<\/em> healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n

She didn’t specifically divulge what was happening in her life, but she noted that even loving fans could get it wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never know what someone is going through, so even if you are coming from a loving place and a caring place, that person probably is working on it or has a support system that they are working on it with.\u201d<\/p>\n
