When<\/span> <\/i>Emily in Paris<\/span><\/i> hit Netflix, the world was in the crux of the pandemic with countries in and out of lockdowns and millions stuck at home with nothing to do other than watch Lily Collins<\/a> play an ignorant American in the French capital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Within days of its release, the show had broken streaming records, becoming the biggest comedy of 2020 on the streaming service. It was being spoken about\u2014and written about<\/a>\u2014<\/span>everywhere<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the series aiming to be lighthearted and fun, created by the man behind <\/span>Sex and the City, <\/span><\/i>Darren Star<\/span> (and styled by the woman behind all of Carrie Bradshaw\u2019s best outfits, Patricia Field), the backlash from Paris and beyond was swift.<\/span><\/p>\n

Critics said that show had too many stereotypes, too many berets<\/a>, not enough diversity, and was overall a bad representation of what Paris is really like. The backlash only intensified when <\/span>Emily in Paris<\/span><\/i> was nominated for a Golden Globe<\/a>, while Michaela Coel\u2019s groundbreaking show,<\/span> I May Destroy You,<\/span><\/i> was not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
