From the moment John Galliano\u2019s animatronic, Belle Epoch-inspired broken beauties craned onto the Parisian underbelly runway at Maison Margiela\u2019s Spring\/Summer 2024 Haute Couture show<\/a>, fashion\u2019s lexicon could only go into rapture. Like a rhapsody on a windy night, the viral whirlwind of Third Republic characters bellowed into a storm of incessant intrigue.<\/p>\n

Yet, it was the porcelain doll skin and 18th-century watercolour makeup that Pat McGrath engineered for the show<\/a> that really captured the zeitgeist\u2019s attention. A video posted by model<\/a> Lea Julian, who presented the 22nd look of the show, sent the internet into a frenzy as she innocuously filmed herself peeling the artistry off her face, revealing that the generation-defining beat was merely a mask.<\/p>\n

Let it be known before the court that all evidence points to a humble drug-store peel-off cucumber mask as the product responsible. The proof is in the vitrified finish\u2014and some insider intel from a makeup artist working backstage at Margiela\u2019s show. As proposed by beauty historian, makeup artist and former prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of McGrath\u2019s, Erin Parson, the \u201cListerine mouthwash\u201d consistency of the \u201ccustom mix\u201d hinted at the $4 gel mask as the culprit.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a custom mix, not sure if her core team did it themselves or someone else as we were given the product in cups,\u201d a source told Parsons. The celebrity makeup artist posted the conversation on TikTok, with the person in the know adding: \u201cAll I can say for sure is that it was a water-based product as we had to be very careful with what we use underneath. Kryolan Liquid Glass<\/h3>\n

The former leading hypothesis\u2014before McGrath shut down this line of inquiry\u2014was Kryolan\u2019s Liquid Glass gel. As per the professional beauty brand the \u201cfully dried film is completely transparent, very reflective and appears almost like a glass coating\u201d\u2014qualities that lead to this product being the forerunner.<\/p>\n

Face & Body Gloss<\/strong><\/h3>\n

While a face and body gloss may have been applied over the top of the airbrushed cocktail, it hasn\u2019t been ruled out as the official product used by McGrath to create the shiny consistency.
