Award season\u2019s fanfare drummed up again today with the announcement of the 2024 Academy Award nominees. Being acknowledged by the film industry\u2019s leading body has been conflated with walking home with the gilded Oscar statue itself. So naturally, this year\u2019s class earned the ire of netizens after Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie<\/a> were snubbed from major categories for their work on Barbie<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Though it’s rare for a film to have both critical and commercial success, the plastic, fantastic feminist retelling<\/a> of an icon broke new ground for female storytellers\u2014grossing a record-breaking and history-making<\/a> billion dollars at the box office and receiving a hoard of nominations at the 81st Golden Globes<\/a> and 29th Critics Choice Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Barbie<\/em> was recognised with eight nominations, including for \u2018Best Picture\u2019 (alongside Oppenheimer<\/em>, Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em> and Poor Things<\/em> among others), Gerwig and Robbie were omitted from their respective fields; \u2018Best Director\u2019 and \u2018Best Actress in a Leading Role\u2019.<\/p>\n

The optics of failing to acknowledge these industry pioneers for their trailblazing work is magnetised by Ryan Gosling\u2019s nomination for his performance as Ken for \u2018Best Actor in a Supporting Role\u2019 and \u2018Best Original Song\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreta Gerwig directed a billion-dollar grossing film which saw Margot Robbie and a cast of women start global conversations about the man-made systems that oppress and silence women and the impossible expectations placed on us from girlhood. So, the Oscars nominated Ken,\u201d wrote the founder of Australian news company Cheek Media,<\/a> Hannah Ferguson.<\/p>\n

This sentiment was echoed across social media and by the cast of Barbie who did receive nominations for their work in the film. Ryan Gosling expressed his gratitude for the nomination while uttering his disappointment for Gerwig and Robbie\u2019s snub.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no Ken without Barbie,\u201d he wrote in a statement<\/a>. \u201cAnd there is no \u2018Barbie\u2019 movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,\u201d he added. \u201cNo recognition would be possible for anyone in the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I\u2019m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n

America Ferrera<\/a> was nominated for her first Academy Award for her performance as Gloria, a Mattel employee and foil to Robbie\u2019s main character \u2018stereotypical\u2019 Barbie. She said<\/a> of the snub: \u201cGreta has done just about everything that a director could do to deserve it. Creating this world, and taking something that didn\u2019t have inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing to not see her on that list.\u201d<\/p>\n
