It was dubbed by the press as the moment Prince William knew Kate Middleton was \u2018the one\u2019<\/a>. Now, it\u2019s being relived in The Crown\u2019s<\/em> sixth and final season<\/a>, introducing a new audience to the now-Prince<\/a> and Princess of Wales\u2019s<\/a> fairytale love story. We\u2019re, of course, referring to the impromptu charity catwalk held in 2002 at Scotland\u2019s Saint Andrews College.<\/p>\n

The Prince and the Princess both attended the prestigious university and majored in Art History, where they connected as first years before flatting together in an off-campus terraced share house. (\u201cI went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy about meeting you,\u201d Kate confessed during a 2010 interview about their kismet encounter in September 2001.)<\/p>\n

But, it was on the precipice of concluding their freshmen courses when the wheels of their burgeoning romance were set into motion. The fundraising fashion show arguably changed the course of both their lives, with Kate eschewing her primed demeanour and sporting a dress that caught the eye of her future husband. As they say, the rest is history.<\/p>\n

Before Netflix\u2019s fictional adaptation of the event lands on the small screen, we\u2019re revisiting the truth behind the sartorial scandal. From her infamous hairpiece to Prince William\u2019s reaction, reacquaint yourself with the now Princess\u2019 \u201croyal flush\u201d ahead.<\/p>\n

The Sheer Dress Seen Around The World<\/h3>\n

While Kate’s sheer dress sold at a 2011 auction for over \u00a365,000 (Dhs300,000 approx), the gossamer garment had humble origins. The piece, made from a transparent knitted fabric and blue ribbon, was made by Kate\u2019s friend Charlotte Tod for less than \u00a350 (Dhs230).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear whether the dress, which was part of a university assignment, was made with Middleton in mind, or how the future Queen ended up wearing that specific garment. Whatever the story, but it proved to cement William\u2019s feelings towards her.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the press<\/a>, Tod shared that the task “was called ‘The Art of Seduction,’ which is quite apt\u201d. \u201cI didn’t know who Kate Middleton was and I didn’t put her in it. It was just pure chance,” she added. \u201cEveryone says that the fashion show was when the romance started, so a small part of me will always be part of royal history. It’s madness!”<\/p>\n

A Front Row Rendezvous<\/h3>\n

As you\u2019ll see in The Crown<\/em>, Prince William paid \u00a3200 for a front-row ticket at the charity event. It\u2019s not confirmed if Prince William had prior knowledge that Kate would walk the show, however, the serendipitous encounter catapulted their relationship from platonic to romantic.<\/p>\n

The event is dubbed as the moment Prince William realised Middleton was \u2018the one\u2019, though neither royal has addressed those reports. Meg Bellamy, the 21-year-old actress portraying Middleton<\/a> in The Crown<\/em> shared<\/a> she felt \u201capprehensive\u201d about \u201creliving a key event\u201d. Understandably so, considering the moment was so integral to Kate and Wills\u2019 story.<\/p>\n
