The ornate monolithic columns at Cipriani Wall Street are hemming in New York<\/a>\u2019s most influential crowd this evening at the 33rd<\/sup> annual Gotham Awards. Renowned for celebrating achievement in independent filmmaking, tonight will see Bradley Cooper honoured with the Cultural Icon and Creator Tribute for Maestro<\/em>, Ben Affleck will be awarded the Visionary Icon and Creator Tribute for Air<\/em>, and Greta Gerwig<\/a> will be feted with the Global Icon and Creator Tribute accolade for Barbie<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n

Along with some wonderful new directors nominated, another notable mention is May December<\/em><\/a>\u2014the critically acclaimed film which premiered in Cannes in May and stars Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman\u2014which is nominated for Best Screenplay. Another is Past Lives<\/em>. Starring Greta Lee, it follows a woman reunited with her childhood best friend from Korea, and is nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance. Lee will go head to head with Michelle Williams for Showing Up<\/em> and Cailee Spaeny for Priscilla<\/em>. You can see the full list of nominees here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As we wait with bated breath for the announcement of the winners, here are the red carpet\u2019s special mentions, led by a newly blonde Penelope Cruz. The 49-year-old actress is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Ferrari<\/em>. Also nominated in this category is Ryan Gosling in Barbie<\/em><\/a> (of which chats this week suggest there might be a sequel<\/a>) and Rachel McAdams in Are You There God? It\u2019s Me, Margaret<\/em>.<\/p>\n
