Can the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences retrospectively issue someone an Oscar Award for a performance in an audition? If so, we believe that Britney Spears is due the accolade after the never-before-seen tape of her audition for Rachel McAdams\u2019 role of Allie in <\/span>The Notebook <\/span><\/i>has been released. (To critical acclaim, may we add). <\/span><\/p>\n

Though fans of the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks\u2019 best-selling novel may be aware that Spears was considered for the role in the 2004 romance-drama\u2014a part that eventually went to McAdams and saw her and her on-screen counterpart, Ryan Gosling, become one of Hollywood\u2019s biggest power couples<\/a> in the early 2000s\u2014the pop star has shed new details about the process in her upcoming unreleased memoir <\/a><\/span>The Woman In Me<\/span><\/i><\/a>.<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

In the book, Spears writes that she was the final competition for McAdams<\/a>, explaining: \u201c<\/span>The Notebook<\/span><\/i> casting came down to me and Rachel McAdams\u201d. \u201cEven though it would have been fun to reconnect with Ryan Gosling<\/a> after our time on the Mickey Mouse Club<\/em>, I\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t do it,\u201d she continued. \u201cIf I had, instead of working on my album<\/span> In the Zone<\/span><\/i> I\u2019d have been acting like a 1940s heiress day and night.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The multi-hyphenated performer\u2014whose acting credits include her tenure on the aforementioned children\u2019s program and her breakout role in the 2001 bildungsroman film <\/span>Crossroads<\/span><\/i>\u2014noted that the role would\u2019ve been in her disinterest as she would\u2019ve struggled to separate\u00a0her real self from the character<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope I never get close to that occupational hazard again. Living that way, being half yourself and half a fictional character, is messed up. After a while you don\u2019t know what\u2019s real anymore,\u201d she noted. <\/span><\/p>\n

Though the eventual casting choice resulted in the beloved romance drama, it did rob us of a film where Gosling and Spears teamed up again. Though that version of the cinematic masterpiece may exist out there in another universe, thankfully we have remnants of what could’ve been with Spears\u2019 unreleased audition tape coming to light. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the line reading, Spears can be seen delivering an emotional rendition of Allie\u2019s tear-jerking monologue as she reunites with Noah after returning to Seabrook to see him have built their dream house. (The lines before Gosling\u2019s iconic: \u201cI wrote you 365 letters! I wrote you every day for a year!) Gosling\u2019s voice can be heard off-screen, but it\u2019s Spears’ delivery that will really move you. <\/span><\/p>\n

Prepare to go back to the high school days of rewatching <\/span>The Notebook <\/span><\/i>till tears stream down your face and watch her audition tape below.<\/span><\/p>\n
