Cast your mind back a few years and you might remember a time before words like “retinol<\/a>“, “hyaluronic acid” and “niacinamide” entered the public vernacular. There was, believe it or not, a such time when people would read an inki list and feel utterly baffled. Nowadays, the likes of TikTok<\/a> and Instagram<\/a> have the general public feeling pretty clued-up about all things skincare<\/a> ingredients, and to this end, we know you want to know all about the industry’s new and cutting-edge ingredients. With this in mind, may we introduce you to the beautysphere’s latest contender for widespread adoration: malassezin. (Pronounced mal-uh-say-zin).<\/p>\n

What is Malassezin?<\/h3>\n

Malassezin is a naturally occurring molecule found on the skin since birth. It’s said to be 10 times<\/em> more effective than vitamin C<\/a> at targeting signs of hyperpigmentation, and it’s less likely to irritate skin as it improves the moisture barrier at the same time. It also provides antioxidant protection and is currently only available in skincare form via new brand Mother Science.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The discovery of this ingredient for use in skincare came about when Mother Science co-founder, Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger, developed a harmless skin condition that caused lightened patches of skin on her back. She had a literal lightbulb moment and wondered, “Could whatever caused them be used to intentionally reduce the look of dark spots on my face?” She, along with Mike Einziger, then assembled a power team of scientists and dermatologists, and the rest is history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What is hyperpigmentation?<\/h3>\n

Okay so malassezin tackles hyperpigmentation, but what exactly is hyperpigmentation? It’s basically an umbrella term for a number of skin conditions where you see a darkening of the skin due to melanocytes (the cells responsible for making pigment) being triggered to work overtime. Melasma, post-acne marks, brown spots and sun damage are all types of hyperpigmentation. In a clinical study carried out by Mother Science, it states that “Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are the most common conditions in subjects with skin of colour affecting more than five million people globally”.<\/p>\n

How does Malassezin work?<\/h3>\n

Malassezin mimics your skin’s own molecules to tackle hyperpigmentation in three ways: by reducing excess melanin production, decreasing melanin transport to the upper layers of skin and minimising melanin transfer to skin cells.
