Since becoming the royal Grainges, Sofia Richie and Elliott Grainge have been the stuff of couple goals. With their matching ‘quiet luxury’ style and loved-up snaps, it seems the two were made for each other. But in a new interview, the 24-year-old has revealed how the love of her life was always just a longtime friend\u2014and just how they became more.<\/p>\n

“We started off just as friends. I would always tell him, \u2018Whoever you end up with is the luckiest girl.\u2019 I thought that person is going to be really loved, appreciated, and worshipped,” she told Who What Wear<\/em><\/a>. “And then I realised one day… Why can’t that lucky girl be me?”<\/p>\n

After a turbulent relationship in the public eye, Sofia was keen to keep her new love on the down low. But as she explains, things were different with Elliott, 29, in a way that gave her a sense of security.<\/p>\n

“When we started being romantic, he just gave me a different feeling,” she said. “It was a feeling of safety. It was the feeling of really being appreciated. I knew when we started dating that he was my husband. It wasn’t a \u2018Do you think one day he\u2019ll propose?\u2019 It was like, \u2018This is my husband\u2014100%.\u2019 I felt this love for him that I never felt ever in my life.”<\/p>\n

While the beginning of their love story doesn’t have an exact start date, Sofia and Elliott have known each other since they were kids thanks to Sofia’s dad Lionel Richie being good friends with Elliot’s father, Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge.<\/p>\n

She first posted him on social media in March of 2021, but things were still under the radar until April when a source gave Entertainment Tonight<\/em> some insight into how they got together. “They have been friends for years, and Elliot is also close with Sofia’s brother, Miles,” they said. “It’s very nice for Sofia to date someone her family approves of and likes.”<\/p>\n

In August of that year, the two quickly got serious by buying a $25.9 million house together. They soon upgraded to a $41 million mansion in Los Angeles after less than a year.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to April 2022, and the pair got engaged<\/a> after Elliott popped the question while surrounded by flowers and an aisle of lit candles. Sofia then converted to Judaism<\/a>, describing it as “one of the greatest experiences of my life.”<\/p>\n

And as anyone who was on the Internet at that time would know, the loved-up couple made things official in April of this year, exchanging vows during a lavish week-long affair<\/a> in the south of France. The newlyweds’ nuptials went viral for their fun-filled footage<\/a>, and even their Maldives honeymoon<\/a> dominated our feeds.<\/p>\n

All this goes to show that sometimes, the best choice really can be sitting under your
