Within the British monarchy, subtle sartorial cues are employed to convey the royal family member\u2019s emotions without uttering a single word or eschewing their morale-boosting megawatt smiles. <\/span><\/p>\n

In June of 1981 a then 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer took cues from this stylistic mode by not just making her feelings towards \u201cthe firm\u201d apparent<\/a>, but also boldly emblazoning them across her chest like wearing her heart on her sleeve. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was a polo match, and the Princess of Wales had only been engaged to King Charles III for a mere four months, yet in her exceptionally iconic ensemble she made her emotions known by donning an understated sheep sweater. <\/span><\/p>\n

Designed by Warm & Wonderful,the red sheep sweater<\/a> worn by Princess Diana featured rows of knitted white sheep, save for one unmistakable black sheep, inadvertently revealing to the world her innermost thoughts: \u201cI am an outsider\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

The sweater has since gone on to be one of the late Princess’s most memorable garments<\/a> and a symbol of her masterful prowess in sartorially articulating and conveying the mode. <\/span>Now, courtesy of an upcoming Sotheby auction<\/a>, owning this piece of royal history is a reality. <\/span>The knitted sweater will headline Sotheby\u2019s inaugural \u201cFashion Icons\u201d sale, hosted in September 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“This exceptional garment, meticulously preserved, carries the whispers of Princess Diana’s grace, charm, and her keen eye for fashion,\u201d Sotheby’s global head of fashion and accessories, Cynthia Houlton, described in a statement. <\/span>The piece itself is estimated to fetch between $50,000 to $80,000, however for collectors of rare and unique fashion pieces, owning this signature garment is unequivocally invaluable. <\/span><\/p>\n

Until now, this sweater has remained in the custody of Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne, the owners of Warm & Wonderful. <\/span>The sweater was returned to them by Buckingham Palace after Princess Diana damaged the sleeve. <\/span><\/p>\n

Rather than returning the original amended garment, Muir and Osborne produced a completely new sweater for the Princess, which is a piece she \u201crewore\u201d to the polo in 1983\u2014that time, over a pussy bow blouse\u2014and now remains part of the Victoria & Albert Museum\u2019s permanent collection. <\/span><\/p>\n

This second sweater was also recreated for Emma Corrin in Season 4 of The Crown. <\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

As for the original, the piece resided in Muir and Osborne\u2019s attic for over forty years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs we were rummaging through the attic searching for an old pattern, we spotted a small box,\u201d Miur and Osborne revealed in a statement. \u201cInside, tucked away beside a cotton bedspread was Diana\u2019s original red sheep sweater from 1981. Now, almost four decades later, this one-of-a-kind sheep sweater is ready to make its way into the hands of a fortunate collector.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Of its contemporary aficionados, Harry Styles<\/a> sartorially referenced the red sweater with a blue vest variation that he wore while out in New York in 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n

Kim Kardashian has also made herself known as a keen proprietor of rare fashion items once owned by exceptional women, even spending $197,000 on Princess Diana\u2019s Attallah cross<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

While there\u2019s nothing compared to owning the original, a reissue of the design is also currently available to purchase at a far less hair-raising price tag.<\/span><\/p>\n
