Every city has its clich\u00e9s. They aren\u2019t necessarily bad but simply oft-promised experiences of culture. A sojourn to Naples \u2013 usually a stopover while en route to elsewhere<\/a> \u2013 involves pizza and pickpockets, one might think. Illustrator Vincenzo DelVecchio reconfigures our imaginations with his intricate window portrait; A bustling, complicated Napoli, one rich in character.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI am not from Naples but from the age of 10, I\u2019ve been adopted by this city. It\u2019s my house. Its rhythm \u2013 crazy and messy \u2013 is\u00a0my rhythm,\u201d Del Vecchio says.<\/p>\n

Describing Naples as \u201cseductive\u201d and \u201csacred\u201d, the architect- come-artist recalls the complex and polluted city\u2019s \u201calleys, chaosand noise\u201d as his first memory. His illustration is intricate and complicated and inspired by a mythological mermaid namedPartenope.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ambivalence of the mermaid \u2013 woman yet animal \u2013 evokes the sacred and profane side of a mythological figure that, likeNaples, seduces and deceives,\u201d Del Vecchio explains. \u201cMy style is strongly influenced by my background as an architect; the\u00a0skill of transferring 3D reality onto a bi-dimensional piece of paper. It\u2019s a method that creates perspectival illusions.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Naples, the past is everywhere. \u201cI remember my first day at University. A young barman brought a coffee to a priest in Pio Montedella Misericordia Church in the centre of Naples,\u201d recalls Del Vecchio. \u201cAbove their heads hung The Seven Acts Of Mercy painting by Caravaggio. It was an everyday moment lived with calmness, without giving any weight to such an important work \u2013 a piece of artI could have admired only in books.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you find yourself with 24 hours to see Naples, Del Vecchio suggests starting your day with a nice coffee and a walk through thecity\u2019s historical centre, along its tight alleys. \u201cListen for the voices of its inhabitants,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

For lunch, even the artist suggests pizza. (Neapolitan tradition says pizzas should have more sauce than cheese). And Aperitivo hour is best experienced with a view \u2013 try Castel Sant\u2019elmo, a medieval fortress located on Vomero Hill which overlooks the city.<\/p>\n
