The news of Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s break up<\/a> hit us\u00a0hard.\u00a0<\/em>With rumours flying for months that the long-time couple were engaged, married or even planning a family, hearing that Swift’s longest relationship<\/a> (that we all thought would be her one true love) was over felt as devastating as, well, our own splits.<\/p>\n

Given the couple were together for over six years, there is a lot to unpack here. Let’s take a look back at the day these two met \u2013 and what happened in the lead-up to their break up.<\/p>\n

May 2016<\/h2>\n

Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift are strongly rumoured to have met at the 2016 Met Gala<\/a>. While this was the same Met Gala where Swift met (and went on to date) Tom Hiddleston, it’s the lyrics from her song ‘Dress’ on album\u00a0Reputation<\/em> that fuel this theory. \u201cFlashback to when you met me, your buzzed cut and my hair bleached,” the song goes, the exact haircuts of Alwyn and Swift at that time respectively.<\/p>\n

October 2016<\/h2>\n

A few months later, the couple are spotted at a Kings Of Leon concert. While Taylor Swift attended with friends, fans later figured out that Alwyn was also at the same show. Did they attend together?<\/p>\n

November 2016<\/h2>\n

Again, the pair appeared at the same event \u2013 this time, at Alwyn’s film premiere Billy Lynn\u2019s Long Halftime Walk<\/em>.\u00a0<\/em>However, Taylor Swift attended with friends and there is no evidence she and Alwyn caught up.<\/p>\n

May 2017<\/h2>\n

The first reports that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn were dating appeared in\u00a0The Sun<\/em><\/a> in May 2017. A source supposedly close to the couple said, \u201cThis isn\u2019t a new couple alert or a secret relationship – the only people this has been a secret to is the media because all of us, Taylor and Joe\u2019s closest friends and their families, were aware they have been together for several months and have known each other for a long time.”<\/p>\n

June 2017<\/h2>\n

Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift were spotted in Nashville<\/a> \u2013 allegedly, Alwyn had flown into town to meet Swift’s parents. The same month, Swift’s best friend Selena Gomez<\/a> alluded to the relationship during an interview with SiriusXM.<\/em> When asked if they had been on double dates together, she said that while they hadn’t she was excited for Swift. “Honestly, if my friends are happy, that makes me happy. That’s all I care about.”<\/p>\n

July 2017<\/h2>\n

One month later, the couple are snapped by paparazzi leaving Swift’s apartment<\/a> in New York.<\/p>\n

October 2017<\/h2>\n

Late 2017 is when Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn seemed more comfortable making their relationship publicly official. For the release of ‘Gorgeous’ off\u00a0Reputation<\/em>, Swift allegedly told fans at a listening session that the song was about Alwyn. When the album was released a month later, fans connected many lyrics to the actor, and it became apparent that their rumoured relationship was pretty certain.<\/p>\n

May 2018<\/h2>\n

The couple shared photos that linked them for the first time on social media in May 2018, both posing in front of the same cactus tree in a national park.<\/p>\n
