Since the term \u2018nepo babies\u2019 blew up online last year, following one woman\u2019s viral tweet about watching <\/span>Euphoria<\/span><\/i> and finding out Maude Apatow is, indeed, a nepo baby, celebrities, especially those who come from privileged or famous families of their own, have been dodging the topic left, right and centre \u2014 when they know what\u2019s good for them (ahem, Lily-Rose Depp).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But one person who has thoughts worth listening to is British actor, writer and director Michaela Coel, the creator and star of both<\/span> Chewing Gum<\/span><\/i> and the critically acclaimed show<\/span> I May Destroy You<\/span><\/i>. And someone who is very much not a nepo baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with the<\/span> Evening Standard<\/span><\/i><\/a>,<\/span><\/i> Coel, who is working alongside the British Film Institute (BFI) to mentor young filmmakers in the country as part of the BMW Filmmaker Challenge (more on that here<\/a>), shared her thoughts on nepotism within the industry and how it can impact creators, saying the issue is \u201c100% there and present\u201d in Hollywood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other than working productively to mentor young creatives as she’s currently doing, Coel has found she has \u201cto not think about [nepotism] too much,\u201d as it doesn\u2019t benefit creators. \u201cAnd it certainly doesn\u2019t benefit me because it just makes me angry,\u201d she said. <\/span>\u201cIf people don\u2019t believe that [being] the child of someone, or the niece or nephew of someone, whatever [that relationship may be], has anything to do with their achievements, then that is hilarious,\u201d Coel continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI find that very funny \u2014 that is a cute way for you to live, you carry on like that. The rest of us, we can\u2019t think about this too much, because it\u2019s going to make us feel defeated. You have to say, like, \u2018f*** that system. I\u2019m going to figure out a way to do my own thing\u2019, and you can stand adjacent to those people and know how you got there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Showing she\u2019s aware of the immense success she has found, Coel recognises she\u2019s now part of the privileged set, and that her status could impact those around her in the future. AKA she could birth nepo babies of her very own.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe other truth is if I continue on my path and have children, I\u2019m sure my opinion will evolve somehow,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coel also recently discussed with <\/span>The Guardian<\/span><\/i><\/a> how those from marginalised groups in particular still often go unnoticed in the entertainment industry, despite the amount of progress those in power would like to pretend we’ve made in that department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are incredible voices from marginalised and oppressed communities that have a lot of things to say, and it\u2019s a pity that we\u2019re still not hearing those stories,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cIt\u2019s really easy to feel quite downtrodden, to feel like the odds are stacked against you, and just seeing a version of yourself, your story or your experience can do a lot to take you out of that mentality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9593,"featured_media":32249,"template":"","format":"standard","categories":[36,35],"yoast_head":"\nMichaela Coel Weighs In On The Nepotism Babies Conversation<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Actor, writer and director Michaela Coel says the nepotism issue is "100% there and present" in the industry today.
