There have been very few accurate portrayals of the Nakba (translates to ‘The Catastrophe’), where more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled from their homes as a result of the creation of Israel in 1948. Darin Sallam, however, has portrayed this significant event in history in a harrowing story through her critically-acclaimed debut film, Farha.<\/p>\n

From its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, the film has since risen in popularity after it began streaming on Netflix in early December. It has so far been selected as Jordan\u2019s 2023 Oscars entry, and has secured best youth film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, with the streaming service giving the film a wider audience to share its striking and deeply personal story, one that still resonates with Palestinians as the effects of the Nakba continue decades on.<\/p>\n

\u201c1948 is an important year for the Arab World, but it\u2019s hardly ever mentioned,\u201d says Sallam, writer and director of the film. \u201cEverything that is going on today \u2013 from checkpoints to the separation barrier, to continued displacement – originates from this particular incident, from this specific year. I wanted to tackle this issue head on.”<\/p>\n
