Yesterday, Chanel<\/a> presented its first ever show in Africa, marking it as the first-ever European luxuriate to do so.<\/p>\n

The M\u00e9tiers d’art collection 23 was shown in Dakar, Senegal to a crowd of 800 people (Pharrell Williams, Naomi Campbell, Whitney Peak and Nile Rodgers among them). Dakar has been a dream of Virginie Viard’s for quite some time, but it was important to the creative director that it occurred “gently, over several days of deep, respectful dialoguing”. <\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>Going beyond the runway show, it\u2019s the event as a whole that I took into account. We’ve been thinking about it for three years,”<\/em> shares Viard.<\/p>\n

Held at the Brutalist-style former Palace of Justice, the show celebrated local culture and art forms, opening with dancers from the \u00c9cole des Sables, as well as the voice of Obree Daman. The collection itself had a distinctly ’70s spiritedness to it, replete with geometric shapes, warm colours, fitted coats, flares and rich embroidery. Footwear-wise, model’s moved down the runway in weighty platforms \u2013 an of-the-minute style that’s sure to sell out.<\/p>\n

Joyous and energetic, the collection provided a much-needed injection of colour and culture this late in the year. “I put all my soul into it,” shared Viard via press release. “These marvellous encounters from which artistic adventures like this one are born, that’s what drives me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beauty wise, makeup artist Lisa Butler<\/a> created a glowing complexion, adding a dusting of gold shadow across the lid (the Les 4 Ombres Quad in Codes \u00c9l\u00e9gants<\/a>, for those wondering). Hair was personalised to each model but always polished, worn either braided, out or into a loose wave.<\/p>\n
