All anybody could talk about in Hollywood during the ’90s was a young Winona Ryder<\/a>. She had appeared in films like Beetlejuice<\/em> and Edward Scissorhands\u00a0<\/em>all the while dating the equally brooding and famous Johnny Depp<\/a>. The couple met in 1989 and were engaged after just five months. Four years later – during the height of toxic tabloid culture – they split to intense public scrutiny.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with\u00a0Harper’s Bazaar,<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>the actress briefly addressed the breakup explaining it was like living the real life version of her role in the 1999 psychological drama,\u00a0Girl, Interrupted.\u00a0<\/em>The character in the film was rushed to a psychiatric hospital after she attempted suicide. For Ryder, she credits a therapist for saving her mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember, I was playing this character who ends up getting tortured in a Chilean prison,\u201d Ryder told the publication. \u201cI would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face [from the shoot], and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl. \u2018Would you be treating this girl like you\u2019re treating yourself?\u2019 I remember looking at myself and saying, \u2018This is what I\u2019m doing to myself inside.\u2019 Because I just wasn\u2019t taking care of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
