She has become known for addressing her anxiety through her art, and here it is injected into the bustling, hustling metropolis of New York City. In June, Contreras\u2019 imaginary plane window will become a reality as she embarks on a vacation from her home city of Santiago in Chile. She imagines what a postcard may look like from the island of Manhattan \u2013 the towering buildings, yellow taxis and just a hint of American Psycho \u2013 where she dreams of walking through Central Park. Her first order of business, however? \u201cEating a hotdog before jumping on the subway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Maria Contreras <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mariajesuscontreras\/\" target=\"_blank\">@mariajesuscontreras<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Cappadocia, Turkey by Ahmed Emad Eldin<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cIt would smell like nature, it would smell really pure\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23997 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_3.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Ahmed Emad Eldin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ahmed.emad.eldin\/\" target=\"_blank\">@ahmed.emad.eldin<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Reykjav\u00edk, Iceland by Chaymaa Sobhy<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019d love to see the magic of the aurora with my own eyes someday\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23998 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_4.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Egyptian-born Chaymaa Sobhy \u2013 who is best known for writing and illustrating picture books from her home in Cairo \u2013 says she has always approached her work with a \u201cchild-like imagination towards the wonders of the world.\u201d Sobhy dreams of visiting the Nordic city of Reykjav\u00edk, the capital and largest city of Iceland, when the pandemic eventually ends. From September through to March, the mesmerising Northern Lights can be seen dancing in moody shades of green and blue throughout the night sky. This is just one of many sights that the artist hopes to experience. \u201cI would definitely start by visiting a caf\u00e9, then I\u2019d visit the waterfalls and mountains and explore the beauty of the natural landscape,\u201d she imagines.<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Chaymaa Sobhy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/chaymaadraws\/\" target=\"_blank\">@chaymaadraws<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Montreal, Canada by Justine Allenette Ross<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat intrigues me about Montreal is the beauty of it\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23999 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_5.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Justine Allenette Ross admits that she knows very little about the Canadian destination, other than that the people largely speak French. Despite this, the artist paints a lively and accurate picture of Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s largest city. She describes her style as cartoony, playful, and figurative with \u201ca touch of umami\u201d. She explains, \u201cSince I\u2019ve never been to Montreal, I used my personal aesthetic to guide me on how I rendered the location. My imagination runs wild. I take the world as I see it and try to enhance the things that I find beautiful. I love how old school European it looks [with] the French influence.\u201d To accompany her dreamscape of the metropolis, her wish list of places to visit include The Montreal Biosphere, a museum dedicated to the environment.<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Justine Allenette Ross<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stinallenette\/\" target=\"_blank\"> @stinallenette<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Pamukkale, Turkey by Emma Eubanks<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI imagine being engulfed in a dense heat while smelling sea air\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24000 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_6.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For years and without any context, Minnesota local and illustrator Emma Eubanks says she has had an image of Pamukkale, Turkey saved in her camera roll. \u201cI didn\u2019t know anything other than that it was beautiful,\u201d she admits. The town is found within west Turkey and neighbours Hierapolis, an ancient Roman city founded around 190 B.C. Its hot springs are also known as the Cotton Castle, famous for a carbonate mineral left by the shimmering blue water. \u201cWhat intrigues me the most about this location is how tactile it seems to be,\u201d she says. \u201cOne of things that really fascinated me about this region is its documented history. I like imagining a personification of the history there and the traces of people that came before interacting with the landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Emma Eubanks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/emmastopdrawing\/\" target=\"_blank\">@emmastopdrawing<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Cartagena, Colombia by Laila Ekboir<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI miss warm and sunny days a lot\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24001 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_7.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/> <\/em><br \/>\nCurrently based in Cambridge, illustrator Laila Ekboir has endured yet another grey winter in the eastern pocket of the United Kingdom. She reminisces about early mornings at the beach, afternoons spent exploring the coast by foot and balmy evenings listening to live music over dinner. For Ekboir, she immediately dreamt of the vibrant city of Cartagena in Colombia when asked to pick her first destination after the pandemic. The artist is known for exploring texture, shapes and colour through her work so it comes as no surprise she is intrigued by the historic city. \u201cThe architecture of the Ciudad Amurallada and the colours of the Getsemani neighbourhood caught my attention,\u201d she says, reflecting on the bougainvillea flowers hanging amid the cobblestone. \u201cI prioritised the use of colour and patterns and I tried to find spaces where tropical plants might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Laila Ekboir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/laila_ekboir\/\" target=\"_blank\">@laila_ekboir<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Peruvian Amazon, Peru by Amber Badger<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019d expect to see a rich verdant harmony from all angles\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24002 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_8.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><br \/>\nAlthough she now lives in remote Wales, Amber Badger owes her creative success to the artistic scene around her native Liverpool, drawing influence from organic form for her celebrated ink artworks. It comes as no surprise that she one day hopes to swap the grey skies and lanes of England to travel to the Amazon in magical Peru, peeking out at the vegetation from her imaginary plane window. \u201cIllustrating organic form comes naturally to me, so I just went with the flow,\u201d Badger says. \u201cThe diversity of life in the rainforest makes it easy to play around with shapes and form.\u201d The Falmouth University graduate admits that while she has always been fascinated by the region, she has not yet had the chance to experience it for herself. \u201cPlants are often overlooked, but they are<br \/>\nthe starting point for all life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Amber Badger @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/amberbadgerillustration\/\" target=\"_blank\">amberbadgerillustration<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Venice, Italy By Laura Stitzel<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI imagine that Venice is full of overflowing lanes and alleyways\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24003 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_9.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><br \/>\nHailing from Melbourne, Australia, illustrator Laura Stitzel is well-acquainted with bustling inner-city transport culture and it\u2019s one of the many reasons she hopes to visit Venice. The historical island, which is connected by tight streets and winding canals, first piqued the artist\u2019s interest during lockdown in 2020 when reports emerged of thriving plant and wildlife being seen through the clearer water. It is what inspired her window seat view from the plane, and now she dreams of getting lost throughout the Italian destination. \u201cThe canal system of Venice recalls this charming fantasy, it seems almost too whimsical to be real,\u201d she says. \u201cI would find some coffee and pastries before heading to an art gallery in a fascinating old building. I would finish the day with perhaps a classic movie on a rooftop cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Laura Stitzel @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/laurastitzel\/\" target=\"_blank\">laurastitzel<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Cappadocia, Turkey by Danica da Silva<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI would imagine the place to be vast, an unimaginable sight to the eyes\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24004 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_10.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><br \/>\nFor three years, Danica da Silva and her partner have been planning a trip to Turkey with the pandemic preventing their travels. By combining layers of illustrations with different textures \u2013 reminiscent to printmaking if you will \u2013 da Silva lets her \u201cbrain run wild\u201d as she illustrates the Cappadocia region, \u201ca scene that I would hope to see from a hot air balloon in the sky.\u201d Hailing from Cambridge in the UK but born in India, the artist admits she has seen nothing like it in her own vicinity. \u201cIt\u2019s natural and beautiful landscape is a wonder of the Earth and is not even close to the little brick homes [we have here],\u201d she says. \u201cThe former homes carved into rock formations are a wondrous sight and I\u2019m amazed that they were inhabited by communities up until 1952!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Danica da Silva @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yetanotherbydanica\/\" target=\"_blank\">yetanotherbydanica<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Positano, Italy by Bayan Dahdah<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI always had this image of tumbling cliffs with colourful houses that meet the sea\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24005 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_11.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><br \/>\nOverlooking a bay on Italy\u2019s Amalfi coastline, the small village of Positano hosts a population of just under 4,000 people. It is, however, a popular tourist destination thanks to the stunning scenery. Multimedia creative Bayan Dahdah believes it is every artist\u2019s dream to paint this view from a window. \u201cThe azures of the water, the terracotta of the buildings. It always felt dream-like to me,\u201d she says. \u201cThe first [sensation] that comes to mind would be a gentle breeze, followed by the smell of the salty air by the sea. The sound of gentle waves hitting the shore, the buzz of people walking.\u201d Dahdah is known for her hand-drawn illustrations layered with digital elements.<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Bayan Dahdah @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bayandahdah\/\" target=\"_blank\">bayandahdah<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Chefchaouen, Morocco by Helen Zughaib<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI would walk up as many stairs as I could, taking in each tiny surprise waiting for me behind the twists and turns\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24006 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_12.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Colloquially known as the \u201cBlue City\u201d, Chefchaouen is nestled between the Rif Mountains in far north Morocco. Illustrator Helen Zughaib, who hails from Washington D.C. in the United States, has travelled to many of the country\u2019s glorious cities but daydreams about the day she can fly to this particular colourful, cosmopolitan place. With bright accents from flowers and orange-tiled rooves, textiles hanging off balconies and iron work in the windows and doors, it now provides a stunning backdrop to daily life at the gateway of Africa. An oasis from the rest of the world.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is so beautiful and has a serenity that is very appealing especially after these past two years dealing with the pandemic,\u201d Zughaib says. \u201cIt almost seems like a secret hideaway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Helen Zughaib @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hzughaib\/\" target=\"_blank\">hzughaib<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Tokyo, Japan by Sasha Haddad<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI feel that one can travel in time there&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24007 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_13.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><br \/>\nThe most intriguing aspect of Japan\u2019s capital for artist Sasha Haddad is the culmination of historical architecture and modern technology. \u201cIt triggers my curiosity,\u201d the Beirut-born, Athens-based artist notes. The liveliness of Tokyo also reminds her of Beirut. \u201cI have always imagined Tokyo to be a mix of lit signs, futuristic features, tall buildings and paper lanterns flying above small alleys,\u201d she says. \u201cTo be a city where my eyes will be constantly amused, and I tried to translate that into my drawing.\u201d When international travel fully resumes, the creative plans to \u201chave a breakfast I never imagined existed and see as many cherry blossom trees as possible. I\u2019d visit the temple of Sens\u014d-ji, have lunch in a famous Japanese restaurant before [visiting] the Yayoi Kusama Museum,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Sasha Haddad @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sasha.haddad.illustrations\/\" target=\"_blank\">sasha.haddad.illustrations<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Cairo, Egypt by Dan\u00e9 Stojanovic<\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cI was super curious about Egypt and its history in school\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24008 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2022\/06\/high-expectations_14.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/em><br \/>\nGRAZIA\u2019s creative director and illustrator Dan\u00e9 Stojanovic, has always been intrigued by the Arab country. Its towering pyramids and complicated history are just a snippet of the mesmerising culture, so it comes as no surprise that Cairo is his dream destination. Set on the Nile River, it serves as Egypt\u2019s capital and is the most developed metropolis in the sprawling, sand-dusted country. \u201cThe modern side to the city opens up an entirely new place of what I imagine Cairo to be,\u201d Stojanovic says. Within his artwork he has attempted to combine what we already know of the city at face value combined with a sense of modernity. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty much exploring the dichotomies of modern Cairo and clich\u00e9d stereotypes of what we know Egypt to be and merging those two themes together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Dan\u00e9 Stojanovic @<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/danestojanovic\/\" target=\"_blank\">danestojanovic<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>This feature y is published in the third edition of GRAZIA Middle East.
