There\u2019s no shortage of pressure when creating a new high jewellery collection. However, the creative directors at the helm of heritage brands are presented with unique challenges, like toeing the line between pioneering new designs while meeting the stylistic expectations of the brand\u2019s existing clientele. For House of Garrard\u2019s creative director, Sara Prentice, this challenge is invigorating and, more importantly, embedded into the creative process.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur designs often consist of a Garrard motif, which holds inspiration from royal jewels that Garrard has created,\u201d Prentice shared with\u00a0<\/span>Grazia<\/span><\/em>, \u201cthis means that every piece is a nod to our history.\u201d House of Garrard has a wealth of history for Prentice to siphon from as the world\u2019s longest-serving jeweller, dating back to 1735. The high jewellery house is best known for its longstanding connection to the British Royal Family<\/a>, acting as its appointed crown jeweller since 1843. From tiaras to trophies at the Royal Ascot<\/a>, Garrard has cemented itself as a key figure in British culture and high jewellery worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

This history might intimidate some, but Prentice is no novice in the fine jewellery industry. Before joining Garrard in 2012, she cut her teeth for twenty years at iconic labels such as Cartier<\/a> and Faberg\u00e9<\/a>. For her latest collection, titled \u201cBlaze,\u201d Prentice \u201cwanted to take Garrard\u2019s iconic 1735 cluster motif and turn it on its head.\u201d She executed this plan by centring the cluster in the middle of the jewel and \u201cframing it with a placement of masterfully selected monochromatic gemstones.\u201d Prentice is most excited to show customers this cluster inversion because of its novelty. \u201cIt took sheer creativity, unlimited by design rules or tradition,\u201d to create it, she shared.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a creative director, Prentice is undaunted by the task of reinvigorating Garrard with new designs. Her confidence emits through this high jewellery collection, inspired by \u201ccreating the unexpected.\u201d She hoped to infuse the jewellery with zeal and positivity by using punchy colours and unique textures. \u201cThe name \u2018Blaze\u2019 was perfect in projecting this,\u201d she shared, adding, \u201cit\u2019s about blazing your way and being confident while you do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Prentice noted that the \u201cBlaze\u201d collection \u201cwas created by women for women, with \u2018forever\u2019 in mind.\u201d She revealed that it\u2019s different from previous Garrard collections \u201cin the way it represents more than beauty,\u201d adding that she and her team \u201cwanted to evoke a feeling of faith in oneself and modern radiance when wearing \u2018Blaze.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
