The news that Reese Witherspoon would be reviving her iconic role as Elle Woods for <\/span>Legally Blonde 3 <\/span><\/i>was music to millennials\u2019 ears back in June 2018. But since then, there\u2019s been no word of when we can expect the film\u2019s release, a trailer, or even for it to start filming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, the pandemic had its part to play in production being delayed, as it did with every film and TV show of recent years. <\/span>Legally Blonde 3<\/span><\/i> was originally scheduled to be released in May 2022 \u2013 next month! \u2013 but it’s since been pushed back with no new release date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Naturally, fans are wondering what\u2019s going on and now we know: pandemic aside, there\u2019s been something else that\u2019s been holding its writers, Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, up: wanting to get Elle Woods\u2019 story right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to <\/span>TIME<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Kaling explained, “We don\u2019t want to be responsible for ruining what\u2019s basically Reese\u2019s Avengers franchise.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“What is Elle Woods like at 42? Does she end up becoming all the things she wanted? How does that personality manifest in a grown woman? Has she become more cynical?\u201d Kaling said. \u201cHer brightness and her cheerfulness really worked when she was 22, but how has life changed her perspective on things?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Referencing the recent <\/span>Sex And The City<\/span><\/i> reboot <\/span>And Just Like That<\/span><\/i>, Kaling said she found the show “uncomfortable to watch,” adding, “I felt like I could commiserate with the producers and the writers of the show, trying to address all these issues from the past, and be funny and fabulous, but also sort of apologise for itself.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Going back to <\/span>Legally Blonde 3<\/span><\/i>, she went on, “The hardest thing about this project is trying to figure that out in an authentic way. Honestly, watching <\/span>And Just Like That<\/span><\/i>, and how they took a character from 18 years ago, and how the character was now \u2013 we want to make sure that Elle Woods is not paying penance for existing in the year 2022.”<\/span><\/p>\n

She added, “We\u2019re not afraid of the character in this world, and we don\u2019t feel we have to apologise for her. As a fan, I didn\u2019t want to watch her be cancelled or become a Karen. So the character is just fun.
