A 35-year-old with an impressive design pedigree that includes stints at Balenciaga, Celine, and Calvin Klein with Raf Simons, Blazy was the ready-to-wear design director at Bottega Veneta when his then-boss, Daniel Lee, abruptly <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/articles\/matthieu-blazy-named-as-bottega-veneta-creative-director\/\">announced his departure last October<\/a>. The story of lesser known in-house designers stepping into the limelight has been a popular one in fashion since Alessandro Michele\u2019s triumphant runway debut in 2015. Tracee Ellis Ross, Julianne Moore, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> star Jacob Elordi were among those who turned out to see how Blazy fared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He fared very well. The fall winter \u201822 collection did a perfect job of marrying the \u2018New Bottega\u2019 staples of Lee\u2019s tenure with his own recognisable stamp. The opening look was a case in point: taken from afar it looked the quintessential minimal outfit: low-rise blue jeans and a white vest top. On closer inspection, you\u2019ll see that the tank and jeans are actually made out of leather\u2014a Bottega Veneta staple. The look was an embodiment of Blazy\u2019s new ethos for the brand: clothes that make more sense IRL than they do on Instagram. \u201cI think luxury is something you feel rather than see,\u201d he told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/fashion\/fashion-week\/a39250311\/bottega-venta-fall-2022-review\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harper\u2019s BAZAAR<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> US<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cIt is much more personal and emotive for the person wearing the clothes than the ones looking at them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_210186\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210186\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-210186\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bottega_Veneta_W22_025.jpg\" alt=\"Bottega Veneta Fall Winter 2022\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1536\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-210186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Courtesy of Bottega Veneta<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This sentiment is simple but in an era of rampant \u2018buying for the gram\u2019-fueled consumerism it feels profound. In many ways Daniel Lee became a victim of his own success at Bottega Veneta<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Almost overnight, he transformed a heritage brand best known for its understated leather goods into the buzziest brand on planet earth. Everyone from minimalist-obsessed Scandi fashion bloggers through to the entirety of the Kardashian family were cloying to get their hands on one of his puffy pouch bags, woven leather mules, or oversized shearling coats. Lee\u2019s one-time mentor, Phoebe Philo, built Celine\u2019s reputation on quiet desirability, but no matter what he seemed to do at Bottega (deleting the <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/articles\/deciphering-the-great-instagram-purge\/\">brand\u2019s Instagram account<\/a>, switching runway shows for intimate \u2018salon\u2019 events) Lee couldn\u2019t quell his own mania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blazy seems well-positioned to create a happy balance between Bottega\u2019s understated heritage and its newfound popularity among trend-obsessed millennials. The pieces in FW\u201922 felt\u2014to borrow an underwhelming word\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cool<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, without feeling like they would break the internet. Navy wool coats with a flattering cocoon-style silhouette, floor-skimming leather skirts with playful volume-enhancing tassel underlays, shrunken patchwork sweaters. They felt wearable and enduring\u2014perfect for 2022, and beyond. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_210187\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-210187\" style=\"width: 1024px\"
