Just minutes after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a “special military operation”<\/a> in Ukraine yesterday, reports flooded the internet of bombings and unrest in several cities including the capital, Kyiv. The move by Russia has been called “unprovoked and unjustified”<\/a> by US President Joe Biden. Footage<\/a> from the country is both frightening and heartbreaking with hundreds of thousands of people attempting to flee to the west.<\/p>\n

Angelina Jolie<\/a>, an ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has since responded to the news. On Instagram she published a statement which reads: “Like many of you, I’m praying for the people of Ukraine. My focus along with my UNHCR colleagues is that everything possible is done to ensure the protection and basic human rights of those displaced, and refugees in the region.”<\/p>\n

She continued, “We have already seen reports of casualties and people starting to flee their homes to seek safety. It is too soon to know what will happen, but the significance of this moment – for the people of Ukraine, and for the international rule of law – cannot be overstated.”<\/p>\n
