Sixty percent of those women wish they had more respect for themselves. Unfortunately, as a young woman living in her mid-twenties, the statistics don\u2019t surprise me. I am confident in myself and my abilities but am not immune to self-doubt as a result of the new rising pandemic: the self-love crisis.<\/p>\n<p>British actress and activist <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/articles\/jameela-jamil-kim-kardashian-waist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameela Jamil<\/a> knows all too well the significant repercussions of low self-worth. At a young age Jamil had developed an eating disorder and body dysmorphia which lasted well into her teens and early twenties. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/jameela-jamil-photo-eating-disorder-too-fat-public-sad-day-2019-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 2019<\/a>, the <em>Good Place<\/em> star posted a 2009 image of herself to social media and admitted that at the time she believed she was fat due to ideals manifested by the media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really urge young women out there to be careful about what they\u2019re reading, what they\u2019re seeing online, who they\u2019re following and whose words they\u2019re listening to,\u201d Jamil told GRAZIA during a round table interview with fellow journalists. \u201c[They need to] re-educate themselves about the capitalist system that has been built to destroy their foundation of self-worth. That has been deliberately chipped away at in order to disempower and distract women so that we can\u2019t catch up as a gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/millennial.therapist\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;The Milennial Therapist<\/a>&#8216;, Sara Kuburic has also partnered with The Body Shop and echoes this advice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"quotation-style\">\u201cPerfection is not the goal, authenticity is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She continues, \u201cIt\u2019s ok to ask for what you deserve. Actually, you <em>should<\/em> ask for the things you deserve. As Kuburic says, the solution to improving our self-esteem is actually quite simple but \u201crevolutionary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShowing up authentically. I know it\u2019s a clich\u00e9 answer, but sharing our personal struggles and going, \u2018Hey I\u2019m really sad today,\u2019 would be earth shattering. Just for us to be honest about our own feelings &#8211; not to smile when we don\u2019t feel like smiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an identity expert, I see so much damage done when people can\u2019t show up as who they really are,\u201d Kuburic continues. \u201cI think one of the greatest things that we can offer one another is just that space. Credit: Supplied \/ The Body Shop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yes, women bear the brunt of systemic gender inequality but minority groups such as the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to have low self-love, whilst economic status also impacted self-love, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebodyshop.com\/en-au\/about-us\/activism\/self-love\/a\/a00038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Body Shop<\/a>. 45% of those who are unemployed and 46% of those who are not financially comfortable fall in the lowest 25% of scores according to the research. Furthermore, heavy social media users have lower levels of self-love, are more likely to compare themselves to others, and are often more unhappy with their body. Unfortunately, this is not exclusive to any one gender, race, religious belief or class.<\/p>\n<p>On February 27, 2021, American actor and director Jonah Hill posted to Instagram an image of himself surfing in Malibu. The paparazzi shots were first published to a tabloid media outlet. The <em>21 Jump Street<\/em> actor was quick to call out the publication calling it \u201cmockery\u201d and admitting his childhood insecurities and body image issues lasted long into his mid-thirties. Now at age 37, he says it doesn\u2019t phase him anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a \u201cgood for me\u201d post,\u201d Hill wrote on Instagram \u201cAnd it\u2019s definitely not a \u201cfeel bad for me post\u201d. It\u2019s for the kids who don\u2019t take their shirt off at the pool. Have fun. They\u2019ve run out of inches on our bodies to make money out of. So now they\u2019ve turned to men, and not just men within the LGBTQ community but also straight, cis men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through Kuburic\u2019s work as well as research conducted by The Body Shop, the struggle is equal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s equally hard for men to love themselves and that was a bit of a shock for us at the start. In my private practice it shows time and time again that men pick their bodies apart, men have a hard time loving themselves,\u201d Kuburic says.<\/p>\n<p>It ultimately begs the question: what is the end goal?
