Fast<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/articles\/nicolas-ghesquiere-louis-vuitton-dinner-2021\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fashion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is turning the world into a crumbling wasteland and endangering the sustainability initiative that we\u2019re all trying to work towards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Muneera Al Mulla, the co-founder of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eco-age.com\/resources\/including-the-middle-east-sustainable-fashion-conversation\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CArab%20customers%20are%20interested%20in,referring%20to%20the%20coronavirus%20crisis.\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kuwait-based brand<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayaeco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maya<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, reveals how the Middle Eastern community is walking towards a more sustainable future. \u201cArab customers are interested in sustainability and there is a crowd that wants to buy sustainably, which has become evidently clear during this [COVID-19] pandemic. Maybe now people will realise what they should buy and shouldn\u2019t \u2013 especially if they are going to be wearing it at home and multiple times a week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, this isn\u2019t to say that we, as consumers, are completely responsible for the repercussions of fast fashion. Who doesn\u2019t love low-cost fashion choices that also match the latest industry trends? Not to mention the dynamic changes in fashion trends and poor quality that make it difficult for the younger generations to hold onto clothes for a longer duration, which, unfortunately,<a href=\"http:\/\/admin.umt.edu.pk\/Media\/Site\/STD\/FileManager\/OsamaArticle\/FastFashionSustainability.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> encourages disposability<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zara and H&amp;M<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/sustainability\/our-insights\/style-thats-sustainable-a-new-fast-fashion-formula#:~:text=Zara%20offers%2024%20new%20clothing,five%20a%20year%20in%202011.\" target=\"_blank\"> launch<\/a> 24 yearly and 12-16 weekly collections respectively to keep up with these trends, with Zara producing approximately<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefashionlaw.com\/fast-fashion-sustainability-is-about-more-than-the-fabrics\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 450 million garments<\/a> per year with around<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefashionlaw.com\/fast-fashion-sustainability-is-about-more-than-the-fabrics\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 500 new design<\/a> releases a week, or about 20,000 different styles a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14961\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14961\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14961\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/255766241_1206624893178880_5311982623321185670_n.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"605\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instagram @guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe conversation should not be about blaming people who can\u2019t afford anything else. It really does go as deep as what is valuable to us as individuals and how we can create this shift in how we see the world,\u201d fashion activist Tolmeia Gregory<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/uk\/fashion\/a36050764\/fast-fashion-shame-comment\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cPeople always talk about being \u2018conscious consumers\u2019, but why do we not see ourselves more as citizens and individuals who are more than what we\u2019re buying? The burden of sustainable fashion should not fall on the individual. It\u2019s more about system change and looking at the wider picture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This brings us to brands and their pledge for an environmentally conscious model to consider consumers\u2019 growing concerns for sustainable clothing. For instance, the world\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.money.co.uk\/credit-cards\/most-popular-fashion-brands\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">most popular fashion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and largest fast-fashion retail brand, Zara, has plans to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brightly.eco\/fast-fashion-brands-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">eliminate single-use plastic products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and 100% zero waste in its supply chain by 2023, only using cotton, linen, and polyester by 2025, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zara.com\/us\/en\/z-join-life-mkt1399.html?v1=1902922\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201creduce and offset all emissions\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by 2040.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14962\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14962\" style=\"width: 605px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14962\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/256076422_356855179547790_3456374429832209714_n.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"605\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instagram @guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet the question remains if two of our most prized possessions &#8211; fast fashion and sustainability &#8211; can co-exist together. A value of more than<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/blogpost\/why-fast-fashion-needs-slow-down\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">$500 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is lost every year due to the mass production in the fast fashion industry which leads to \u201cunder-utilized clothes and lack of recycling\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Franklin Zepeda, the founder of EcoFibra &#8211; a company working on insulation panels from cast-off clothes &#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20211108-chile-s-desert-dumping-ground-for-fast-fashion-leftovers\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> mentioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> how fast fashion is becoming a growing hazard because of its components: \u201cThe problem is that the clothing is not biodegradable and has chemical products, so it is not accepted in the municipal landfills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A brand\u2019s environmentally friendly initiative doesn\u2019t negate the impact of fast fashion and high<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefashionlaw.com\/fast-fashion-sustainability-is-about-more-than-the-fabrics\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">disposability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> rates but is still an indication of the progress made by fast<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/articles\/fashion-swarovski-and-amina-muaddi\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fashion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> brands on recognizing the need to shift to a more sustainable future.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14963\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14963\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14963\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/me\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2021\/11\/258219196_443564160497062_2123940295207659532_n.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"478\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instagram @martinbernetti_photojournalist<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In early November 2021, at least 39,000 tons of discarded and unpurchased<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/fast-fashion\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fast fashion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> items flooded<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Atacama<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> desert.
