After an explosive finale to the second season of Euphoria – quite literally – attention has now turned to the forthcoming third instalment. While plans for the next season are still tightly under wraps, Zendaya has teased that she might add ‘director’ to her already impressive resumé. In a recent interview, the actress revealed that she was slated to direct in season 2 however timing constraints meant she had to take a step back. At least for now.
“It’s funny. I was actually supposed to direct episode 6, but then I had to act in it,” she said. “I didn’t have enough time, so, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to this time around. I wanted to have enough time to do it the right way.”
The actress portrays the problematic drug-addict teen Rue in the HBO Max series. She added during the interview that she hopes to make her directorial debut for season 3. “Next season probably,” she shared.
The bulk of Euphoria has been directed by series creator and writer Sam Levinson while Pippa Bianco, Augustine Frizzell, and Jennifer Morrison all directed one episode in the first season. Zendaya has worked behind the scenes of the series, however, and collaborated with Labrinth on both soundtracks.
The 25-year-old is currently filming the second Dune film with director Denis Villeneuve alongside Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Timothée Chalamet. Her most recent film, Challengers, is currently in pre-production and expected to release in cinemas in August 2023.
