April 23, 2021: In November 2017, Selena Gomez shocked fans when she unexpectedly traded her signature brunette locks for platinum blonde hair at the 45th annual American Music Awards. The internet was quick to nickname her “Blondelena,” and oh, how we’ve missed her. Today, without any warning, once again, the 28-year-old singer went blonde, sharing the news on her beauty brand’s Instagram feed. The hair change was courtesy of the same hairstylists who helped her debut the hair color four years ago: Riawna Capri and Nikki Lee of Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood, California.

In the mirror selfie posted to the Rare Beauty Instagram feed, the founder shows off her new hair, which her stylists have named “Rare Blonde.” The center-parted and subtly rooty style perfectly complements the Selena and Chef star’s complexion, which isn’t exactly surprising considering how long the duo’s been doing her hair. “We’ve been doing Selena’s color for over a decade now,” says Capri and Lee in a statement provided to GRAZIA USA. “She typically keeps it pretty natural, but this time she went for a big change. This blonde is unique to her as we had to make sure there was an equal balance of cool and warm for her skin tone. It’s an edgier look and perfect for summer.”

Want to dye your hair a similar platinum blonde shade? If so, show the following bit of hair industry knowledge with your stylist. “We started by prepping her hair with In Common’s Crystal Serum to add protection before highlighting,” explain Capri and Lee. “We then highlighted every hair on her head with Joico’s Blonde Life Lightening Powder and 30 volume hair developer. This processed for quite some time. After she lifted to a pale yellow, we took the lightener off. We tapped down her root with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 5NA with 5 Volume, then an all-over pre-tone with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 8NW + 10NW equal parts with 5 Volume, and a second toner with LumiShine Demi-Permanent Liquid 10V with 5 Volume.”

“We finished the process with a full Crystal Cashmere Treatment by In Common to lock everything in and bring her hair back to life,” the experts continued, adding that the entire process took “200 foils, several bowls of bleach and 8 hours [total].” As for maintenance, they encouraged the star to use Joico’s Color Balance Purple Shampoo every third time she washes her hair, and In Common’s Magic Myst Leave-In Conditioner for extra vitamins and shine.” Shop Gomez’s updated regimen below.
