Spotted: Joshua Safran. The showrunner to the forthcoming Gossip Girl reboot has revealed the anticipated series will release this July. In a cover story for Cosmopolitan there has been a reason things have been kept so quiet on the new project. There is supposedly a “twist” so secret the production team is just hoping to make it to the air date without a leak.

“My hope is that we make it to airing and people don’t know,” Safran told the publication. “I would love to see that conversation happen in the context of people having seen it as opposed to talking about something they haven’t seen.”

According to the synopsis: “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.”

Executive producer, Josh Schwartz, teased in July 2019 that the new series is distinctly different because, “We’re all Gossip Girl now.” Speaking at the Television Critic Association Panel, Schwartz said, “We are all purveyors of our own social media surveillance state.”

How very millennial-fied. Could this hint at the twist?

Paparazzi images lent a first look at the series which is already promising a fashion-fuelled affair, just like its predecessor. The series is set to drop onto the HBO Max streaming platform and although for now it is slated for a July release, a date is yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime and to fuel your thirst for 2000s television, Schwartz has revealed he regretted killing off Marissa in The O.C.. Speaking to Rachel Bilson, the series creator believed it made many viewers upset on a show that was meant to “bring pleasure”.

Stay tuned for further updates on a release date.
