“Which train do I get on?” “Which platform do I wait to board from?” “What gate do I arrive into?” “Where am I?” While the anxieties of being in transit seem far removed from 2020’s stationary reality, in Australia we’re seeing light at the end of the tunnel; a tiny pocket of time where we can travel about our own great land, and thus a distinct resolve to being shut inside. When it comes to fashion, no longer do we need to dress for the anomie of the supermarket or the mundanity of a Zoom call. Instead we turn our aching minds to dressing for travel; the romanticism of a flowing dress captured in motion while running to a platform. The practicality of a beautiful hand bag. The oversized sunglasses that add an element of glamour and mystery to the worldly woman. Perhaps the suspension in life has meant these moments are more precious than we gave them credit for in journeys past, and indeed we should always travel in comfort, but the notion of travelling in style as well has never felt more exciting. While those transit mysteries and arrival gate queries will still exist, what an exhilarating thought it is to be all dressed up and have somewhere to be.
