The joy of a beauty throwback knows no bounds and while we’re still coveting the 90’s revival, Insta and IT-girls have quietly fast forwarded in their appreciation for a major noughties trend: topknots and supersized hoop earrings. Jennifer Lopez made look her signature in her “So Real” era, while an updo and chunky hoops were of course a staple in Sade’s wardrobe. More recently Celine and Balmain have had hoop variations scattered throughout their collections for the past couple of seasons, but this is the first glimmer of the trend being taken to the streets in such girl-of-the-moment force.

Rihanna if often seen off-duty in the topknot and hoop earring combination, most recently in New York, but just this past weekend both Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner put their own spin on the style. On Instagram Hailey teamed her ballerina bun with some OTT hoops and Kendall paired her messy knot with her own shoulder grazing versions while out in Miami. Meanwhile at the Louis Vuitton Cruise 17 presentation in Rio, Nicolas Ghesquiere’s muse left her fringe free, putting her signature edge on the look.

Smooth, sloppy or texture, the trick to an on-point top knot is placement. Lower on the crown boasts ballerina vibes, while higher on the head gives an athletic, catwalk edge. Use a bungee tie instead of a classic elastic tie to allow you to adjust the tension and minimise bumps along the crown, U-pins work as your initial anchor but bobby pins are best for locking it into place and of course a medium hold hairspray will set it in place.
