Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney’s break-up in July took their fans by surprise – the engaged couple always looked happy and relaxed together whether in candid social media updates or on the red carpet. At the time she released a heartfelt statement on Instagram, writing that they were “hoping to work through long-distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared”.
As 2016 comes to a close, it appears the pop icon and the actor haven’t reached that point just yet. In a far-reaching interview with US network CBS that aired on Sunday, Gaga spoke carefully but openly about the reason behind the break-up.
“I think women love very hard,” she said. “We love men. We just love with everything we have. And sometimes I don’t know that that love is met with the type of dignity that we wish it would be met with.
“You know, we’re not trying to make you less of a man,” she continued. “We just want you to love us as deeply and as wholesomely and as fully as we love you.”
A little cryptic, sure, but it’s about as literal an answer as we can expect to get from the enigmatic artist about why she split from her partner of five years.
In the same interview, the Million Reasons singer discussed the price she’s paid for global fame. “I’m not free anymore,” she lamented. “As soon as I go out into the world, I belong, in a way, to everyone else. It’s legal to follow me. It’s legal to stalk me at the beach. And I can’t call the police or ask them to leave.”
The Born This Way singer began to cry as she revealed how her fame means she can no longer strike up a conversation with a stranger on the street.
“I miss people. I miss, you know, going anywhere and meeting a random person and saying, ‘Hi,’ and having a conversation about life. I love people.”
