It was Coco Chanel who once said: ‘A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life,’ and those wise words still apply when a girl opts for a chop. Amongst the bevvy of celebrities who have jumped on the bob bandwagon in recent months, it was possibly Jemima Kirke who had the most dramatic transformation by taking her waist-length strands up to her chin. However it turns out there was more behind the actress and artist’s mane metamorphosis. “I cut my hair because I felt like my hair was really one of the only things that made me feel pretty,” she said in an online video with self-acceptance blog, StyleLikeU. “You know, I felt like my hair was my go-to trick. I really believed for a while that without it I would be boring.”

Revealing she let go of her Rapunzel-like lengths after an argument with her now estranged husband, Michael Mosberg. “I was having a terrible moment with my husband in our relationship and I was extremely hurt by him and extremely angry at him and so I felt, you know, I was feeling self-destructive. But for whatever reason I didn’t do something self-destructive really I just cut my hair. A couple of weeks later I said I wanted to go shorter and he said I’ll do it, and it was really nice. It was quite kind of romantic; it’s nice to have someone you love cut your hair.”

Reports have emerged this week that she and Mosberg have split after seven years of marriage. Watch Kirke share her tress tale and her story of self-importance in StyleLikeU’s video, called, “Letting Go of Girls and Getting Out Of Her Own Way,” below.
