For the craft-challenged among us (yours truly included), such a precarious endeavour is becoming ever more attainable by the day thanks to the Australians who have been at the forefront of the growing trend towards personalisation.
Chances are you already know Mon Purse and The Daily Edited, two behemoths in the world of bag customisation and initialing respectively, but what about everything else you could put your own spin on? We round up the very best of the newest DIY design options on the market.
1. fOR footwear: Shoes of Prey

Shoes of Prey has completely reinvented shoe shopping. A customisation pioneer, it’s hard to believe that three friends in Sydney founded this start-up turned major fashion player less than 10 years ago. With an endless array of features and details for you to literally create your own perfect shoe, there is absolutely zero chance the same treads will crop up anywhere else (unless you love your design so much you order two pairs). The best part about this game changer? The luxury concept uses premium materials like suede and napa but comes in at a high street price point.

Habbot is no ordinary shoe retailer. Every single pair of shoes is handcrafted in Italy, a claim that few other brands can replicate. But now, this Melbourne-based label is taking this one step further with the launch of #myhabbot — a customisable platform allowing you to completely reimagine 4 of the signature habbot styles in colours, materials and details of your own choosing. And true to habbot form, your shoe design will be brought to life by artisan crafters in Italy. The platform launches on the 3rd of September. We know how we’re going to be filling the space vacated by our annual closet spring clean.

What do Pip Edwards (founder of P.E. Nation), Miranda Tapsell and Samara Weaving have in common? Apart from being Australian women who are killing it in their respective fields, they’re all fans of Newtown-based jewellery label, Haus of Dizzy. They’ve been spotted rocking the astoundingly fun and, frankly, unmissable earrings that the brand creates bespoke for each customer. The designs are quite possibly the funnest things in Sydney (not a hard feat considering the lockout laws…) and won’t even break the bank, with the most expensive necklace barely cracking the one hundred dollar mark.
4. FOR GYM GEAR: Pins to Kill

Leggings. Ahctivewear. Gym gear. Call it what you want but the product is almost always the same. Usually black and more an object of function than an object of fashion. Pins to Kill won’t judge if your preferred shade is black, but their customisable online platform also allows you to create leggings in absolutely any pattern or print that tickles your fancy. With the option to upload an image (yes, it’s that simple) to be transformed into an all-over print, we don’t see why you’d ever customise an existing template (although we respect that the choice exists).
5. for stationery: Goh + Co.

Based in Melbourne, Goh + Co.’s wares are almost exclusively fashioned out of handcrafted saffiano leather, the only exception being the doggo collars you’ll find in breathable cotton — and personalised with hot stamped lettering. This local brand is a budget-friendly destination for classy and timeless leather goods that are still ultimately, one of a kind.
