It turns out good things do come to those who wait after all. After 12 long months, Louis Vuitton’s iconic Sydney boutique reopens its doors today with a whole new, superbly stylish fit-out.

Under the artistic helm of New York architect Peter Marino, the George Street Maison is reimagined with the kind of artful touches and luxurious nuances you’d expect of the brand. Occupying the entire corner of George and King Street, the Maison resides in one of Sydney’s iconic heritage buildings, first constructed in 1857 by Edmund Blackett. Paying homage to the original, storied edifice, the new design tempers history with modernity, keeping landmarked fixtures such as the lower-ground floor-jack arches but adding pops of colour, modern art and light.

Even first stepping inside is via history; the lofty original bank doors the only point of entry. But within, a whole new Louis Vuitton world. The ground floor, with its boldly black and white patterned floor, beholds women’s leather goods, watches, jewellery, travel, fragrance, accessories and the incredible High Jewellery creations, while a trip upstairs reveals the Women’s universe in its entirety.

Via a suspended central staircase, guests are invited to travel to the first floor where the latest ready-to-wear and shoe collections by Nicolas Ghesquière, Artistic Director of Women’s, lie. Here, Gregor Hilderbrant’s 2019 ‘Mit Henklen aus Nephrit’ features; a commissioned piece comprising cut vinyl records, canvas and wood. Below the Damier check surface, the Men’s universe, where Virgil Abloh’s ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories reside.

But perhaps most impressive (and exclusive) is the Apartment; an intimate space for Louis Vuitton’s top tier clientele perched high above its product offering. A series of sublime salons, a gallery and dining area is accessed privately, where artworks from Vik Muniz adorn the walls, including his famed chromogenic prints, ‘Irises, After Van Gough”.

With art intrinsic to Louis Vuitton and its legacy, it comes as no surprise that the Maison’s refurbishment was shaped largely by this. Despite being New York-based, architect Peter Marino curated the artworks and furniture to reflect Sydney’s relationship with nature and the harbour via works by Peter Dayton, Richard Misrach and Thomas Struth. Louis Vuitton’s long tradition of nomadic ‘Objets’ and travel-inspired talismans are honoured, with the Objets Nomade collection available on a permanent basis for the very first time in Australia. There’s also a spectacular display of four antique trunks, presented on the ground floor, which illustrate Louis Vuitton’s timeless tradition of the Art of Travel.

A truly sublime shopping experience, delve into the Louis Vuitton universe surrounded by works of art, archival objets and that irresistible savoir-faire the house is so synonymous with.
