Missy Elliot’s career-spanning throwback performance at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards was a powerful reminder of her hip-hop legacy and influence.
From Get Ur Freak On to Pass That Dutch to Gossip Folks to Work It, watching as the original badass female rapper performed a mash-up of her greatest hits in celebration of receiving the Video Vanguard Award proved just how many artists – especially women like Cardi B, SZA and M.I.A – may not exist if she hadn’t blazed the trail.
Elliott took the throwback to the next level by bringing on stage Alyson Stoner, who was just 10 years old back in 2003 when she danced in the music video for Work It.

Speaking after the performance as she accepted the Video Vanguard Award, the 48-year-old was humble as she reflected on her career of 20 plus years.
“I promised I wouldn’t cry because I cry every award [show], but the Video Vanguard Award means so much to me,” she said.
“I have worked diligently for over two decades. I never thought I’d be standing up here . . . it don’t go unnoticed, the support and love you’ve shown me over the years.”
Do yourself a favour and watch her epic performance.
