No matter what you think of Meghan Markle’s family (specifically her outspoken half-sister Samantha), her father’s interview with Good Morning Britain is heartbreaking. Thomas Markle, 73, talked to the television show’s anchors about the moment he had to break it to his daughter that he couldn’t fly to London to walk her down the aisle due to heart complications and emergency surgery.

[Meghan and Harry] were disappointed,” he said. “Meghan cried, I’m sure, and they both said, ‘Take care of yourself, we are really worried about you.” He said he “absolutely” wanted to walk his daughter down the aisle and that he couldn’t “think of better replacement than someone like Prince Charles.”

“She was beautiful walking down that aisle. And so proud and so gorgeous,” he said. “I was very proud, I couldn’t have seen a better moment in my life.

“The unfortunate thing for me now is I’m that a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle.”

His calm temperament is sharply contrasted to his other daughter Samantha. In the footage below, we see an older man who perhaps was very overwhelmed at the magnitude of such attention but also quite simply of dad who loves his daughter so much. “My daughter has been a princess since the day she was born,” he said. “[Harry] made a good pick, didn’t he?”

Mr Markle said while he hadn’t met Prince Harry in person, the Royal had called him to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage. “I said you’re a gentleman, promise me you’ll never raise a hand against my daughter and of course I give you my permission.”

He also addressed those staged paparazzi shots and apologised, noting he wanted to better his image. “Obviously that all went to hell,” he said. “I feel bad about it, I apologise for it and that’s all I can do. That was a mistake.”

Mr Markle watched the Royal Wedding from a BnB property which breaks our hearts.
